I just read this. So full of assumptions and sidewinding and avoiding and, well, BS.

Sidewinding is the perfect word! I was going to title the thread "CDC's Tim McAfee shows us how to *not* answer the question asked".... Never mind answering the question, just use it as a springboard for FDA/TPC-approved propaganda...

For once, I'd like to see an interviewer respond with "Well yes, that's all very well, but would you mind answering my question?"

I have this image of an ANTZ drone somewhere busily searching the internet for "news" sites that don't provide a comments section and sending out a bulletin to all ANTZ spokespuppets...

Edit: Just noticed, this is my 2,000th post. Woohoo and yikes!

yup sure looks like it!
And big congrats on 2000 posts!
I love your posts! I can always learn something from them. Thank you!

The CDC is just one of several sleeping with the FDA

Add WebMD to that. They are receiving millions to promote the ACA. I don't care to get into the ACA itself, the fact is WebMD is taking money from the government, once they did that they have lost all credibility on these types of issues plain and simple. So sad but the money talks and ........ walks as they say.

Did anyone else pick up on this?

Q. Is nicotine by itself a harmful substance?

A: Nicotine is not the main ingredient in cigarette smoke that is harmful.

Nicotine’s main “harm” is that it is a psychoactive chemical that is the primary driver of a smoker’s desire to continue smoking cigarettes. Smokers become addicted to it, and continue to crave smoking and suffer withdrawal symptoms when they stop.
Nicotine does have some direct harms that we know about. In general, these are less-well understood than the effects of tobacco smoke, because until recently most people got their nicotine from cigarettes....

So nicotine is a psychoactive chemical, is it? Sounds pretty bad, doesn't it? Damning, in fact. But the fact is, the term "psychoactive" refers to any substance, drug, or chemical that crosses the blood-brain barrier to affect mood, consciousness, or behavior. Alcohol is a psychoactive chemical. So is caffeine. In fact, caffeine is the most commonly consumed psychoactive chemical.

He also states as fact that nicotine is addictive (implication: nicotine by itself, absent burning tobacco), which hasn't been definitvely proved, thereby reinforcing that questionable belief.

He goes on to point out that nicotine can be harmful in two instances: during pregnancy, and to the developing adolescent brain. We protect adolescent brains by restricting sales to and use by adolescents of products harmful to *them.* We warn pregnant women not to coonsume harmful products. We don't ban those products across the board to prevent harm to these two minorities.

But see what McAfee did here? Before actually answering the question, he prefaces his response with the fearmongering sciency-sounding propaganda. (I bet he got an A+ in Tobacco Control Propaganda 101...)

At least this interviewer was a little more informed than most. He actually knew that the Youth Survey didn't ask if teenagers regularly used e cigarettes. And McAfee had to scramble. There was a lot of scrambling going on but he had to admit that vaping was safer than smoking. He also had to state that e cigarettes are different from cigarettes.

It is too bad that there isn't a comment section to set the record straight but I'm actually encouraged by this when compared to past propaganda interviews. We just have to keep getting the facts out there.
