More on the War on E-cigs

I found this WebMD news report today of a research study done by higher education professionals (Univ of Cailfornia, San Francisco). I also found that the research spokesperson is apparently completely ignorant about e-cigs and/or is lying ...
"We are seeing the use of e-cigarettes among adolescents rapidly increasing, and it doesn't seem like they're using these products to successfully quit smoking," said Dutra, a postdoctoral fellow at the Center for tobacco Research and Education at the University of California, San Francisco.

The study raises the question of whether e-cigarettes are a "gateway drug," and Dutra said she believes they are. "But that's more my opinion," she said. "The study doesn't show a causal relationship.I can't say e-cigarette use causes kids to smoke based on this finding. We need some more longitudinal data on this. But it does look like these devices are contributing to it."

Although they're often touted as a healthier alternative to smoking real cigarettes, Dutra said there's no research confirming e-cigarettes actually help people wean themselves off real cigarettes or curtail cigarette use. She is also concerned about the way electronic cigarette makers are marketing their products to young people.

"They come in flavors like bubblegum and advertisements that include images of bikinis," Dutra said. "In terms of basic numbers, e-cigarette use among adolescents is disconcerting. Most of these devices do have tobacco in them and we should be concerned and try to limit access to these products."

To which I say: Are they serious? These are obviously slanted observations, based on bogus research! Anti-smoking/anti-vaping spin. And outright lies. "Most of these devices do have tobacco in them"? Excuse me?! These "educated" researchers are obviously ignorant about e-cigs. The whole point of e-cigs is that there IS no tobacco in them! This is what we vapers are up against. Welcome to the "War on E-cigs".

How can people actually believe such tripe? I am certainly no doctor, but it's obvious to me that there is no 'tar' or carbon monoxide in vaping. That alone is enough to be a huge victory over tobacco use.

A gateway drug? It would seem that even minors that vape are exponentially better off than they would be smoking tobacco. {MODERATED}
Mike P.

My apologies.

Most of these products do not have tobacco in them which thwarts the MSA funds down to zero if the next generation doesn't become addicted to smokes. Help us force ex-smokers back to the smoking sections so they will be tempted to go back to smoking after being denied their vaping via bans against public vaping. We must not normalize not smoking or we will lose our million dollar homes, jobs, yachts. For heavens sakes, think of the children! Our children are accustomed to the finer things in life, thanks to the MSA, big Pharma, sales taxes on smokes. If everyone quits smoking by switching to the ecigs, our children will not know the joys of yachting and will have to attend public schools. 'Nuff said.

I have probably made my opinion about the flavor --> marketing to youth concept, using big tobacco and or big alcohol to prove that it is already happening if that is the case here.

I came from smoking flavored cigars, often with berry, vanilla, etc. flavors, to vaping. Look for CAO cigars and cigarillos, in the same area of the local tobacconist's shop you will find several flavors which will remind you of your favorite vape flavors, and probably a few you didn't think of yet.

Remember the first gateway substance most of us ever came into contact with is mother's milk, few criminals, drug addicts, smokers, vapers, politicians, and ordinary miscreants can say they have not experienced the cold hard fingers of mother's milk.

The air outdoor is also a problem, it often has substances in it which are known to cause issues (we generally call it pollution), possibly addictive, and or just generally not GRAS for human consumption, yet nobody is yelling about it being a gateway to smoking, driving like a demon, drug use, or being a dirty politician.
Then comes cow's milk, again difficult to find anyone who has not been there, done that, got the t-shirt.

The gateway theory is the most flawed piece of "research" ever to be conceived in my opinion. You can not have substance A being a gateway to substance B unless ALL substances a person comes into contact with are suspect in the same way, it does not make scientific sense.

Association is FAR FROM CAUSALITY, and even farther from casualty.

As for the money in play, big pharma and big tobacco both have big bullies in the ring already, and are willing to call favors from other industries like alcoholic beverages, medical devices, owned hospitals and doctors, etc. to make sure they protect that cash cow.

That cow has already been wounded, and the result of that is that many legislators are unwilling to further hurt big tobacco, lest their own cash cows as the result of big tobacco would dry up as well.

Thanks OP for posting this. The argument from Dutra is so stupid its almost laughable. I would really like to know how much money Dutra and others out there like her are being secretly paid by big tobacco and big pharma. All of these people need to have their financials investigated because there is no possible way that all of them who oppose vaping are clean. How many secret offshore accounts are currently swelling with blood money from big T and big P. I'm not much in to conspiracy theories but all these attempts on banning vaping just reeks of it.

UCSF is home to Stanton Glantz who is perhaps the biggest ANTZ in America today.
I don't know who this Dutra person is, but they are probably an understudy.

Anyway, here are some answers to your questions...

$500,000 from Big Pharma to project director Stanton Glantz...
Creating a tobacco document archive - Robert Wood Johnson Foundation

$399,000 from Big Pharma to project director Stanton Glantz...
Educational campaign for restaurant owners on smoke-free restaurants - Robert Wood Johnson Foundation

$678,819 from Big Pharma to project director Stanton Glantz...
Educational campaign for restaurant owners on smoke-free restaurants - Robert Wood Johnson Foundation

$300,000 from Big Pharma to project director Stanton Glantz...
Study of tobacco product placement in entertainment media and tobacco industry involvement in political activity - Robert Wood Johnson Foundation

Stanton Glantz is Director of the UCSF Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education...

PLOS Medicine: A Peer-Reviewed Open-Access Journal
University of California, San Francisco has received at least $36,233,049 in grants from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF). UCSF School of Medicine has received $15,299,103 of the 36 million dollars. Tobacco related grants total $12,019,701. Professor Glantz is listed as the contact person for grants totaling $1,577,819. Steven Schroeder, former President of RWJF (July 1990-December 2002) returned to UCSF, School of Medicine to head the new Leadership Center for Smoking Cessation funded with $10,000,000 in grants from RWJF(1). Grant #024783 in the amount of $280,517(2), was concluded by author Lisa A. Bero, Ph.D. that: "Source of Research Funding Influences Studies on Health Effects of Environmental Tobacco Smoke". Professor Glantz was a 2000 recipient of a RWJF award "Innovators Combating Substance Abuse(3)" which is accompanied by a $300,000 grant(4). In addition, Glantz and UCSF have received $15,000,000 in combined gift, endowment and grant from the American Legacy Foundation (ALF) for the creation and continued funding of the Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education and the Legacy Tobacco Documents Library(5). In August 2007 the ALF also provided funding for Glantz's faculty position as the UCSF American Legacy Foundation Distinguished Professor of Tobacco Control(6). It is my opinion that Glantz and UCSF stand to gain vast amounts of future tobacco control grants from RWJF and ALF because articles like those he published in the AJPH and PLoS Medicine.

^^^ I can't tell you how much I love this - except I'd love to have a huge advertising budget to go with it. (Disclaimer: I'm not a chemist and so often I just grabbed the first link that came up) And here we go ....

NICORETTE® | NICORETTE® QuickMist | NICORETTE® products | Stop smoking | NICORETTE® AU

Adults and Children over 12 years of age

Anhydrous ethanol means an ethyl alcohol that has a purity of at least ninety-nine percent, exclusive of added denaturants, that meets all the requirements of the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) D4806, the standard specification for ethanol used as motor fuel. (yea, take that "anti-freeze". BP does fuel)

Propylene glycol - Oops. They use "anti-freeze" too.

Trometamol falls into category C: Trometamol is used in the treatment of: Acidosis. In animal studies, pregnant animals were given this medication and had some babies born with problems. No well-controlled studies have been done in humans, though. Therefore, this medication may be used if the potential benefits to the mother outweigh the potential risks to the unborn child. (Great. No studies = safe for human use?)

Poloxamer 407 (A form of PG?) Most of the common uses of poloxamer 407 are related to its surfactant properties. For example, it is widely used in cosmetics for dissolving oily ingredients in water. This common ingredient in toothpaste and mouthwash can cause high cholesterol in mice. Poloxamer 407 has been held responsible for lipidic profile alteration and possible renal toxicity, which compromises its development for parenteral applications. In addition, new findings have demonstrated immuno-modulation and cytotoxicity-promoting properties of Poloxamer 407 revealing significant pharmacological interest and, hence, human trials are in progress to specify these potential applications.

Glycerol - Vegetables are always innocent.

Sodium hydrogen carbonate - just say it, that's baking soda

Levomenthol - Menthol; a mild local anesthetic and decongestant properties. Isn't menthol supposed to be evil?

Mint flavour - "We haven't tested flavours"

Cooling flavour - another one of those "untested ingredients" per Zeller

Acesulfame potassium - sugar substitute usually blended with other sweeteners to mask the after taste. Critics say acesulfame potassium has not been studied adequately and may be carcinogenic,[9] although these claims have been dismissed by the FDA[10] and by equivalent authorities in the European Union. (I feel so safe the FDA has approved it.)

Sucralose - no comment. Everyone has an opinion on FDA's approval of that one.

Hydrochloric acid is a clear, colorless, highly pungent solution of hydrogen chloride (HCl) in water. It is a highly corrosive, strong mineral acid with many industrial uses. Historically called acidum salis, and muriatic acid. The United States Environmental Protection Agency rates and regulates hydrochloric acid as a toxic substance. This is scary.

Purified water - Is that the same as distilled water?

Anyone have the ingredient listing for other NRT products?

The ingredient listing on Free State Vapor is;
USP Grade Vegetable Glycerin
USP Grade Nicotine (18%)
Natural/Organic Flavors
Water

I assume a pack is not big enough for an ingredient listing of cigarettes or else it would be there if they were FDA approved. Right?

Most interesting link, DC2 !

Below are excerpts from the link's article:

"The New Corporate America Business Model"
"Creating Foundations to Move Their Ideals...and Products
" (by Pam Parker)

-------

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation was created by the founder of Johnson & Johnson with over ten million shares of Johnson and Johnson (JnJ stock). In 1972, it was established as a national foundation worth $1.2 billion [ii]. In 2009, the Foundation's investment portfolio increased $1 billion to $8,379,808,000[iii]. RWJF's mission today: to help society transform itself for the better. Noble sounding, until you delve into the fact that it's what RWJF considers "for the better", foregoing what we want for ourselves or for society. The horrifying truth is RWJF profits from what it wants for society.

The RWJF Anthology "Taking on Tobacco: The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Assault on Smoking" publication [iv] outlines how they gave $99 million in grants to fund coalitions "housed in organizations" such as the American Cancer Society (ACS), American Lung Association (ALA) and American Heart Association (AHA). This publication outlines all the organizations who received over $446 million in grants just through January, 2008. In the beginning, grants were given to organizations to promote tobacco education. Once organizations were used to receiving funding, if they did not move on to tobacco "control", their funding was cut off.

--------

RWJF's funding of tobacco control all links back to smoking cessation. Why is this important? As noted in this article, Glaxo Smith Kline markets Nicorette, Nicoderm, Nicoderm CQ, but these are Johnson & Johnson products, as well as Nicotrol which belongs to J&J's McNeil Company. In fact, J&J has pretty much cornered the market on over-the-counter nicotine replacement products. The lobbying for payment of NRT, increased taxes on cigarettes, lobbying for smoking bans (excuse me, "advocating") all increase not only J&J's profits, but because RWJF owns millions of shares of JnJ stock, so does RWJF profit.

Wow, wow, WOW! DC, have you sent this to the CASAA board? Or is this covered by "the FDA approved it" so suddenly we don't care about giving nicotine to 12-year olds?

Full disclosure:

Berylanna--AFAIK, the FDA has not approved the QuickMist. I may be wrong, but it's not available in the U.S. You can get it on Amazon, but all the shippers are from Australia, the UK and Canada.

All I know is that J&J is manufacturing it.
