If it's an N-FET, for an unregulated it should be fine, since that goes to ground of 510 anyways - I'd either isolate it or secure it to the box, so there's no sparking though
Plus the metal on the back of the device is a thermal connection and should be connected to something metal (ideally a heat-sink) to keep the device cool as it dissipates power...
As long as batt sag doesn't go below Vgs(th) it shouldn't need to dissipate enough heat to necessitate a heat sink
On the IRLx3034PBF it would be min of 2.5V
