A friend of mine mentioned he wants to try to quit smoking and recently started to ask questions about vaping, I started with a simple ego-t but figured out pretty quick that it wasn't enough for me, he's a pretty heavy smoker of 20+ years, he doesn't want to invest too much into it because he's a bit iffy about it, I went through a tonne of hardware before going sub ohm...

Anyways I'm thinking maybe a Kanger iPow2 (1600mah 15w) with a Genitank? It'll be pretty cheap and with adjustable airflow he should be able to find a sweet spot.

What are your guys thoughts on that? Is the genitank good for a mouth to lung?

For now I have a couple ego batteries and a pile of CE4's leftover from a alibaba order that I'll probably give him...

was going to suggest the subox mini but its a little more than he's looking to spend :S
Cry once has always been my moto, if it's something as serious as stopping smoking, spending the extra $$$ shouldn't even be an issue and for what it costs, it's well worth it.

How about:

1. iStick 30 watt with a eLeaf GS Air M Tank (very similar to a Nautilus but costs less) -- for MTL inhaling.
2. iStick 30 watt with a Kanger iSub tank (can't use tank crackers because it's polycarbonate but it costs less)
3. Or either of the above tanks with a Kanger Coolfire 4 (40 watt)

Regarding tank cracking juice: Something Safe for Cinnamon and Citrus Flavors

I believe Sweet-Vapes carries all of these.

An MVP v1 got me off the cigarettes 2 yrs ago, and I believe you can pick up the 2.5 and the 20 watt pretty inexpensively now. Durable, pass-through, long battery life and easy to use. Heck, I still use them for out and about topped with a ProTank 2 with an airflow controller.....and my own made coils. :) Didn't have to worry about which batteries and chargers to buy yet. Just needed something to "get going"! Ha! :)

Thumbs up for trying to help your friend, Asylumsix. :)

Your friend can start with a simple evod blister set-up. Shouldn't cost him much more than smokes for a day or two. Have him get 2 of them so he can always have a battery charged. I have been at this for almost 4 years now and STILL enjoy my evod toppers.

We that have been at this for a while know that it is normally less expensive than buying smokes but for someone that isn't sure it is going to help them, there is the fear factor. The fear that it isn't going to work and if they bought the unknown instead of the known they fear that they will be in trouble.

My sister is the perfect example. She knew it was working for me but was afraid to take the step to see if it would work for her. She is on a very limited income so she could afford one but not both.

i was in my very early stages and had very little to share and since I too am on a very limited income I couldn't afford to buy for her. A dear soul here on ECF offered to send her what she needed. 2 ego type batteries w/a charger, 2 high capacity double coil cartomizers and some tasty juice. Sis is now both smoke and vape free. She is one of his most successful v-verts (((( Iffy ))))

All of this to say---You don't have to start with the latest and greatest to get a very satisfying vape experience. In fact, I am afraid a lot of the latest and greatest will turn away more folks than it will help. A lot of them are to much work and they hit to hard for someone just starting out. I wouldn't recommend a cig-a-like but I also wouldn't recommend any of the newest subohm set-ups either. There is a middle road.

I wish your friend the best of luck as he starts out on this journey to a smoke free life.

The ego twist battery actually worked very well for me when I first got started. Some of these boxy mods look a bit funny to someone just starting out, but if he's willing to go box mod route you should prob do that.

However, I think tube style batteries are good for beginners because you get the same form factor. Something small, but with decent battery life that will last an entire day and night without having to charge would be ideal. 1600mah sounds like it could do that.

Genitank is a decent choice if you don't want to spend the extra couple (yes, couple) of bucks on an aerotank. It's the same thing without stainless steel body. I'd avoid ego threaded tanks, as those have a tendency to leak onto the battery because the base isn't enclosed.

Another recommendation would be for you to give/loan him one of your older mods that you aren't using so that they can have a spare. New vapers always have these little issues, and having a spare keeps them from getting too frustrated and smoking again.

I understand the whole budget thing. I was looking to spend no more than 40-50 bucks myself, because you don't know if it'll work for you. Then it's a complete waste of 50 bucks that you could have gotten a carton of cigarettes for. Also, a lot of smokers don't have 50 bucks to spend on a carton, so they're a go to the store every day and buy a pack kind of person. $50 in one shot to feed a nicotine addiction is tough sometimes.

+1 for this suggestion

My sister finally decided to quit smoking. Probably a 30 year smoker, one pack per day. I took her to a vape shop I was familiar with within driving distance, who had a juice flavor testing bar so she could pick out the flavors she wanted to use.

Thank goodness she didn't want a tobacco flavor. She chose a red hot cinnamon (her favorite), a blueberry cobbler, and a key lime cookie in 12 mg nicotine.

I was going to loan her one of my Provari's, but she didn't like the weight and length. She saw what the sales people were using in the store and liked the size and weight of those: iStick 30 watt with Aspire Nautilus Mini tanks. She bought both, the iStick in a hot pink.

I gave her an Aspire Atlantis tank and an old Protank II which I no longer use. So, she had three diferent tanks for her three different flavors for her iStick 30.

She's been using this setup for over a week, and has had only a few cigarettes during this time. She says she actually prefers her vape over the cigarettes, and the smokes are starting to taste bad. She's committed to not buy another pack of cigarettes. I think she's going to pull this off beautifully. She likes how her iStick fits into a little pocket on the outside of her purse. We have plans on visiting another vape shop with a flavor sample bar in a couple of weeks to try more flavors.

Good Starter Setups for a Beginner

I just got a istick 40w tc and I think it's the perfect entry device.

The price point is great. You can start with a MTL tank like the GS air or nautilus mini, it has enough power to test out subohming and you can try tc devices without upgrading.

For the cost conscious starter this is the best device for trying everything with minimal investment.

ETA: I now use mine during the day with a GS-TANK with the nickel coils and switch to real subohming in the evening.
