my mod is zapping me!!! :)

I normally vape at the .3-.6ohm range but today I decided to go really low for a while to .17ohms (the lower I've been before was .24)

an my nemesis decided to shock me between the 350 and the 650 seam everytime that I vape.
before the safety posts begin
nothing is getting hot
I'm using 25amps out of my 35 vtc5
been rebuilding / using mechs for the past year
I'm not a cloudchasing hypster (well I'm not a hypster)
etc....

I know there must be something dirty on the threads but I don't see it and somehow I can't find my alcohol to clean it.

so for now I'm holding my mod from the lower end and hopping that you tell me that cleaning with vodka or similar is ok

has your mod zapped you?

The vtc5 isn't 35 amps btw, just thought I should let you know so you don't build anything thinking you have the extra 5 amp cushion and potentially overwork your cells. The vt5 is the same as the vtc4 and even the vtc3 in terms of amp rating. As far as I'm aware, the only thing that changed or improved as the versions progressed was the addition of more mah so you could Vape for longer but not with more power or higher wattages/lower resistances. You are right it's not 35 amps continuous, but it is 50+ amps burst meaning that for vaping which is a pulse mode of use, you can consider it a 50+ Amp Battery and have a 15 amp cushion.

I would not vape into a batteries burst spec, specially the batteries that heat up at less than that. Battery condition, being off a bit when measuring resistance, a minor short and/or chain vaping one day might just all work together to cause one to vent. I realize that these cells don't vent with flame, but it can still be dangerous.

Somewhere in the threads there is a bad connection, depending on the mod and style there may actually be a significant air gap between the threads of the two sections when they are tightly screwed together. I'd try a small amount of noalox on the threads between whichever tubes are shocking you, this is a conductivity issue through the threads causing the burn/shock "zap" feeling. I have had it happen a few times with my Origin when I'm just lightly holding it near the locking ring area but only with builds below ~.25 ohms.

As far as pushing the VTC5 hard goes, I currently have a setup with a dual microcoil sleeper twisted 24ga at .12 ohms and the VTC5 gets only slightly warm even with long 5-7 second lung inhales. The Sony spec sheet states the VTC5 can push 100amps for 5 seconds and 60amps for 75 seconds so 35A for even 10 seconds is really nothing spectacular in terms of load on the battery cell.

everything is working perfect now after a good clean. There was no aparent dirt or anything but I guess at this low ohms even a tiny tiny dust fleck matters

Yup. The lower you go, the more significant the insignificant things become. Like a high performance engine. The higher the performance, the more prone it is to little things affecting it.

Glad you got it figured out. If it happens again, and you have DMM, try this:

1. Remove the battery, trying to disturb as little as possible the area where the battery tubes screw together
2. Place mod on a non-conductive surface
3. Switch the DMM to Ω and set the range to the lowest possible setting
4. Place one lead on tube below the seam, the other lead above the seam and check your resistance

You should be reading a dead short... zero ohms. If you're reading anything at all, then there's some resistance between the 2-tubes. That would account for why you're getting zapped. Your hand is acting as a bridge between the tubes, and is providing the continuity between them.
