vaping is still pretty new here in Japan, and the general populous are pretty oblivious to its existence (well, apart from the god awful research paper released here a few weeks ago)

It's a lot easier to be a smoker here than most other "1st world" countries.

All that being said, I think it's very very important that as people who vape, we should respect those around us. I treat vaping etiquette the same way as I did when I smoked. Always ask others around you before you vape if it's OK. Don't automatically vape up and proclaim "hey! It's vapour! It's harmless!!!" You may enjoy the flavour and aroma of your vape, but someone else may not!!! Courtesy costs nothing!

I'm also a teacher and as such I make a particular effort for my vaping to be done away from the sight of my students. It's still an unusual sight to see someone put a tube (or box) to their mouth, push a button and release (in their eyes) smoke!!! Can look very dubious to those who are unaware of vaping.

Basically, I'm trying to say, just because you can, don't automatically think it's OK! There are many cynics out there, and being discourteous, obnoxious or just down right rude about vaping will only harm the movement.

Sorry if this came off a bit preachy.

Hi Shironeko.

I vape the way I smoked, with consideration for others.

Do you have E-Lites in Japan? The company (and product) E-Lites was bought by Japan Tobacco. It was a good move for the people who set up E-Lites as their product is really unpopular in the UK now. Too expensive and very poor.

I wondered if Japan tobacco was trying to replicate the sales in Japan .... sales to new vapers who don't realise what a bad deal they are getting.

You can buy cigalikes here in convenience stores and such, but they're not very popular at all, very small selection and usually tucked away somewhere hard to find. Also, everything is zero nic here (I have to import from either the U.S. or Europe for my nic juice!) this and the fact that cigarettes are relatively cheap here (about 450 yen) means that it's going to take a long long time for vaping to really catch on like it has in the west.

Also, the Japanese government owns a little under 50% of shares in Japan Tobacco (not 100% sure if the exact figure, but the government has to own at least a third by Japanese law)

Kinda makes you wonder if they really want people to give up the JT smokes really!!

Japan is notorious for its slow ability in adapting/embracing new technologies and ideas!! Hell, fax machines are still prevalent among households here!! Smartphones only recently really took off here (last few years)

That's truly bizarre, considering how much high-tech stuff comes from Japan. I still have never found a camera to equal a Nikon.

They make good cars though. If I look out my front window, it's a car park of Japanese cars... all mine :)

It's not entirely related, but kinda a fun vape-etiquette related idea:
I've been entertaining the notion of keeping cigarettes, or cigars, on hand so that I can have the rare smoke for a special occasion. I always offer people around me to puff on an ecig (one of the perks of having a pocketful of cigalikes). Assuming I don't have a problem having cigarettes around (so far no prob) - I ask you all: is it weird or hypocritical to have and offer cigarettes/cigars but not smoke myself? Or would it just be occasional fun and old-fashion-proper-like (my intention)?

PS. Shironeko, hey, I think you're never wrong being overly-polite, of course! I share that sentiment..

Guess it depends on how you feel about the cigarette stink in your house -- I'd never offer someone something and then ask them to go outdoors to partake, so I just wouldn't offer; I sure don't want that reek in my house!

to ecf shironeko. So glad you are here and I quite enjoyed your post. All so true. Look forward to reading more from you. There are lots of wonderful people here that share the same philosophy on vaping.
