(Update – 05.09.18)

During their Monday meeting, the Nassau County Legislature’s Health Committee passed unanimously a bill that would raise the age to purchase ALL tobacco and vapor products from 19 to 21-years-old. This proposal now moves on to the full 19 member legislature where it is expected to pass. According to local reporting, the County Executive, Laura Curran, has stated she will sign the bill.

CASAA continues to urge our Nassau County members to reach out to the Clerk of the Legislature via email, but a more direct communication with lawmakers is likely to have the most effect.

Please take a moment to find your lawmakers here and send them a message through their webform.

Points to discuss in your message are:

  • I am opposed to raising the age to purchase vapor and other low-risk alternatives to smoking to 21-years-old.
  • Adult smokers between the ages of 19 and 21 deserve access to safer nicotine and tobacco products.
  • Tobacco 21 sends the confusing and inaccurate message that smoke-free tobacco and nicotine products pose the same risks as smoking. This law is more likely to deter switching to safer products than it is to prevent youth experimentation.
