Every so often since this thread started, speculation pops up about what Perique is, who controls it, how it's processed, etc. Here are the facts: The Mystique of Perique | The #1 Source for Pipes and Pipe Tobacco Information
Lost of great info there. This part popped out to me.. "The flavors that you get out of the Perique are unbelievable. I mean, youve got that fermentation sort of fruity component, youve got an olive component, you got like a fine nut component, you got layer and layer of flavor from Perique."
When I read about "an olive component" it totally clicked. I've been vaping St. James since yesterday since all the Perique talk got in the mood for it. There's a signature flavor in Perique that really grabs me that I never knew the right descriptive words for, but it's very similar to olives that also have I flavor I don't know the correct words to name the taste. I don't know.. earthy, rich, full, meaty, almost bitter-sour. A result of the unique fermentation process that Perique goes through.
So vaping Perique is definately olive-y to me. Kind of like Kalamata olives, with their fruity, grape/wine tinge. That also explains why I'm not always in the mood for Perique; I'm also often not in the mood for olives. When I am though they're great. Not those fake-black canned jobbers, I never care for those "olives", but the quality ones. Especially the stuffed ones with garlic or jalapeno.
