Need math help

A friend of mine bought some 12 mg nic juice and an equal amount of no nic juice a while back thinking he would cut it in half to make 6 mg juice. But now he wants to try for 4 mg juice and neither he nor I can figure out how to much to mix of each to do it. He thought about cutting the 6 mg juice in half with 0 mg juice but he is not sure he will ever be able to go down to 3 mg.

Thanks for any help.

The Formula that describes Milligrams per Milliliters is expressed as,

Total Milligrams of Nicotine divided by Total Milliliters = Milligrams per Milliliter (mg/ml)

So Lets start with how much 4mg/ml your friend wants to make.

Say your friend wants to make 30ml @ 4mg/ml using an e-Liquid that contains 12mg/ml.

The Total Nicotine in the 30ml's would be...

30ml x 4mg = 120mg of Total Nicotine

Now, How much 12mg/ml do I need to get to 120mg's of Nicotine?

120 / 12 = 10

So it sounds like you need to use 10ml of 12mg/ml to achieve the 120 Total Milligrams of Nicotine.

Now, How much do I need to Add to get to 30ml?

If I know that I have to use 10ml of 12mg/ml e-Liquid already, it sounds like I need to add 20 more Milliliters of something that contains No Nicotine to get to 30ml.

So if I put 10ml of a 12mg/ml e-Liquid into a Bottle, and then add 20ml of something that contains No Nicotine, Shake it Up, and I should end up with 30ml of 4mg/ml e-Liquid.

Is there way I can Check this?

Yeah... Go back to the Formula that describes Milligrams per Milliliters...

Total Milligrams of Nicotine divided by Total Milliliters = Milligrams per Milliliter (mg/ml)

... and lets plug in the amounts we think should be used.

Total Nicotine => 10ml x 12mg/ml = 120mg
Total Milliliters => 30ml

So

120 /30 = 4

Good!

Another way you can do this is to use Percentages.

What percentage of 12mg/ml is 4mg/ml?

4/12 = .3333 => 33.33%

So this tells me that for Any Amount of ml's of 4mg/ml I want to make, 33.33% will be made up of 12mg/ml and the remaining 66.66% will be made up of something that contains No Nicotine.

Say I want to make 60ml of 4mg/ml out of my 12mg/ml e-Liquid.


33.33% of 60ml is 20ml => Use 20ml of 12mg/ml e-Liquid
66.66% of 60ml is 40ml => Use 40ml of something that contains No Nicotine.

@Iron Molly and @zoiDman thank you both for responding. Both my friend and I are math-challenged :confused: . Armed with your helpful posts we can figure this out :)

I taught Math for a Long Time. And I told Students there is No Such Thing as being Math-Challenged.

It just takes Practice.

Where sometimes people can many times get Bogged Down is when they think More about Numbers than about what they are trying to use the Math to actually do.

I bet that when you looked at that 12 in the 12mg/ml and then looked at the 4 in the 4mg/ml, that you had a "Gut Feeling" that you needed about 1/3 12mg/ml to make 4mg/ml.

This is what is Lacking in the way Many Teach Math. To much Emphasis is placed on the Answer by entering Numbers into a Calculator. And not enough is placed on what you are Actually Doing.

Here's a Kinda Funny Example of this...

Man... I wish I could hit the Like Button about 20 Times for this.

I remember I gave a test once and one of the Questions asked to find the Radius of the Earth if the Circumference at the Equator was 24,900 Miles. A student came up to me and told me marked his Question wrong when it wasn't.

I said OK, what answer do you have? He told me the Radius of the Earth was 720,000 Miles.

I smiled and said, "How can the Radius of ANY Circle be Larger than the Circumference?"

Undaunted, he proceeded to Pull Out his TI-89 and Furiously type numbers into it. And then with a Defiant Smirk pointed the Calculator in my Face and said, "See.. See. It's 720,000 Miles".

Is my calculation accurate

Would you believe I had to have a tutor at the 2nd grade to learn the multiplication table? Who does that? I think the part of my brain that does math is underdeveloped yet I was a good bookkeeper for a time.

It's the other side of my brain that works best - I speak three languages, and for years was editor of an English language peer-reviewed journal even though it's not my native language :rolleyes:

I can Fully Relate to that.

Because when I look at Math Formulas, I can close my eyes and I see Neon Green Grid Lines with the Functions Graphed in Red. And see how the Interaction of Terms in an Expression influence the Resultant Solution Set.

But when I type on a Forum, and get stuck trying to Spell a Word (that a below average 6th Grader would have No Problem Spelling) and I close my eyes, this is what I see.

I Can't See Words in my Mind. Never have. Spell Checker is what makes me Appear to be an Average Member of Society.

I hate math too. I am an excellent bookkeeper (my favorite word BTW. All those double letters :D ). My attention to detail is awesome! I can plug numbers in all day long. Just don't expect me to understand what all those numbers mean! ROFLMAO

I get lost if I try to hard to figure something out. I can always balance to the penny though.
