I tend to be an anxious type person...so as I want to do this really bad (or maybe want to want to - but I think more want to at this point), I like seeing the answers to the questions in my over-active mind in preparation. Of course I totally enjoyed smoking all these years...until it's started causing me problems the last few years, that seem to get worse every year. I don't like being short of breath, wheezing, tightness in chest, or worrying about coughing jags hitting during a meeting with my peers, etc etc. I have a list a mile long of "don't likes", which have moved me into wanting to stop. If I didn't enjoy the smoking these years, I doubt I would be looking into these ecigs.

I wanted to tell you something my son said that helped me - He quit smoking a while back by cutting down on cigs, and had a pretty hard time, but did it. Eventually just cold turkey. He called about a month ago and told me he ran into a retired couple who quit with vaping, except the woman has one reg cig with her coffee in the mornings. He said if he was still smoking, he would have tried that. I told him I was afraid because the FDA had not approved of the ecig ingredients (I had read that somewhere) and he said laughing "mom, I don't think the FDA approves of cigarettes either!" Great point!! And it helped me take another step and come back to this board :)

You all are so nice to come on here and help me through this. Reading your posts is helping me get more comfortable with trying. I did look on the bottles my sis sent, and they are 18 mg - she isn't total vaping, but later in the evening and early morning that's what she does to this point. It was so sweet of her to send me a kit because she and I have talked about quitting for years. She used disposables for travelling here for visits on plane - they live something like 2500 mi away! Then heard that many people in her area are quitting with this eGo thing she sent me. Here is what she sent:

It looks like the liquid has PG (not VG) and water, etc. 18mg I think would be a little stout for me. And we find our nicotine level of cigs somewhere online? It used to be on my pack until the big guys got involved and took all that off our cig packs.

Jim, it looks like you are like 2 hours away from me. Maybe we could meet in Lancaster.

I hope I get to remembering all your names when I comment. Columbus isn't too far, especially if I am looking for a good way to help myself and change the direction cigs are taking me.

nctiquer, your comment "I can breath now" is so encouraging!! Coughing 24/7 was not really where I wanted to be at this stage in life. In fact I told myself I would quit at 55 yrs old...and I'm past that now.

Did any of you come on this board while researching, and smoking a reg cig while reading? I feel stupid, but its the way I'm able to face taking this step. And when you say "at your own pace...no pressure..." it feels better. And then when I see that many of you had no intention of quitting, but liked vaping so well you did it...that's where I want to be.

The nicotine level you end up at seems to have very little to do with what or how many cigarettes you currently smoke. There are so many variables that's it's really difficult to predict what x number of cigarettes a day translates to. I was a1.5 PAD smoker, ultra lights. I started at 24 and it was too strong, so I went quickly down to 18. That got me off cigarettes, and I quickly worked down to 12. Stayed at 12 and I'm now down to 6, but I'm using a very efficient delivery device right now (which is another variable). Some people with similar smoking habits to mine might find 24 mg/ml to be just right, others might use 6 mg/ml. The best we can do is sort of give a ballpark. Studies are showing that ecigs do not deliver nicotine as quickly or efficiently as cigarettes do, and how you inhale, what voltage you use, how often you vape, etc... Can all affect the leve that's right for you.

I was one of the lucky accidental quitters. I did not, even for a second, think that this would work. For me, I think that was good because I didn't put any pressure on myself. Some people quit right away, some wean down over weeks or months, and some still have some cigarettes here and there. Whatever works for you is what's right. I found ECF while I was searching for cheaper cartomizers for my little cigalike ecig that I started with (those are long trashed now).

I wish I was in Ohio right now (we are on spring break vacation) and I'd meet you at altsmoke in Columbus or somewhere. I've never been to that location, but they have one in Cincinnati, and it's amazing. I plan on visitng the Columbus location at some point. If you get a chance to go out there, I definitely would. Tell them you are a noob and you would like a full explanation and they will definitely help you out.

It sounds like I definitely want to make a trip to Columbus. I'm going to map it and see just how far - I know the route we take takes about 1.5 hours which could well be worth the trip! I love antique shops too so I can hit some of those while there! Can you trust the people there to help you like the people on this board do?

If it's anything like the altsmoke in Cincinnati you can, for sure. If you have the flexibility, I'd go on a weekday. The Cincinnati one is crazy busy in the weekends and it will be more difficult to get time with the employees. I'm pretty sure the Columbus one is similarly crowded on the weekends.

I found it on N High Street and it looks very nice inside. The have plenty of photos of their bar and couch areas I guess for relaxing while you vape? Anyway - its only one hour twenty minutes from me. Not bad - only about 1/2 hour past Lancaster and I go there a lot. Thanks Spazmelda for the altsmoke info! Also by your sig photo, it looks like you play words with friends!

Ann, as others have said, you can do it!!

bought my first kit on vacation 4/21/11 - weened from 30+ cigs a day to about 14 over almost 2 years, then on March 29, 2013 I said enough and refused to buy another pack. I've tried so many vaping.. things.. during that time, as others have I'm sure of it, and I happened to order the right device and the right topper and the right juice all at once- finally had that vape to make me give up the cigs.

so if it doesn't happen right off, it's ok. take your time.. don't ever stress about it.. this is your way to quit. all of us here found ours- keep trying and definitely go to a shop if one is nearby, and you'll eventually find yours.

I'm totally addicted to wwf. That's not my normal picture though. I thought it was funny, but it goes back to an old kinda gross thread here on ECF.

Hello! I appreciate this board and all the positive posts about your success with vaping!! This gives me hope that one day I can call myself a vaper. Right now I'm smoking a stinky, to even get up the guts to post this...to ask some questions and grab onto some more hope.

I've smoked for 44 years...and now cough all the time...wheeze some...and it's getting my energy messed up. Not getting better and I can't live on antibiotics! Doctor said no cancer or pneumonia on my xray...maybe a little copd...and allergies kicking me into some asthma. Well, then there is reflux that doesn't help too! Getting older is wonderful isn't it!

I'm scared of vaping only because I don't want to make myself worse by doing it wrong! I'm not sure if I'm supposed to hold it in my mouth and blow out...or inhale into my lungs!! And if just in mouth, will it be satisfying enough for me to quit the analogs.

Can I start with the disposables? I have the Blu, V2 and Zoom disposables. My sister sent me a eGo kit..with a note saying to call her and she would walk me through how to use it but she isn't home this weekend. She uses hers in between analogs. I've read a lot here and I think you can use both until you transition over to vaping? Did I read where you have to be careful not to get liquid nicotine on your skin? She sent me two bottles of that.

Was anyone here nervous about changing? Then pleasantly surprised? I'm asking for positive because I want some hope I can do it...and because the negative things (even commercials on TV) make me want to light up!! I just don't want to make myself worse! I'm so tired of coughing!! I see where there are some long time smokers on here - who smoked more than me (I smoke around 1 pack a day) who have been successful with vaping. I love reading those posts.

I know I need to read more..there is so much info on here though and a whole new language...I have a lot to learn!!

Thanks for listening and I will keep reading!

Welcome to the forum! I smoked for 38 years. I was a 2- 2 1\2 pack a day smoker. It took me about 2 weeks to completely stop smoking using vapor. I have not had a cigarette since August 3, 2013. I never thought that I could stop smoking. I know now I will never smoke another cigarette again. I think if I could stop smoking anyone can. Just don't beat yourself up if you backslide a little. I feel better, smell better (no smoke on clothes and hair) and I save a bunch of money to buy myself new toys. Here is my latest.

Hello, Ann!

Glad to see that you're getting more info here. I frequently travel from here (near Akron) to the Dayton/Cincinatti area. If there is someplace along that path that is tolerably close for you, perhaps we can meet for lunch near a vape shop. I'll bring a bunch of vape hardware for show and tell, and answer whatever questions I can. If there is a vape shop nearby, I'd go! There aren't many shops in my area (just north of Amish country), so I take advantage of opportunities to see em!

Safe travels!

P.S. I noticed you like antiques. I just happen to have an interest in vintage designer costume jewelry. Kind of a side business. I have over 4000 pieces, with a particular specialty in Christmas trees. Most of my jewelry is from about 1890 to maybe 1960. Cheers!
