New DIY'er - couple questions if allowed here.

Working on our second attempt (wife and I) as first didn't come out that well. Got a new calculator, using E-juice Me Up and was getting some error messages. Went online as we couldn't remember exactly what was ordered....then found out. Here are my basic starter questions for a BASIC single flavor eliquid:

1) Does most flavoring come as VG based? Seems many of this sites we checked were this way. Also...previous flavors we bought must be this way as well given site says that the ingredients are: Organic Flavors, Vegetable Glycerin and Organic Ethyl Alcohol. No mention of PG.

2) Under the correct assumption that flavor is mostly VG...we'd need to offset this with a PG nic and more PG additive to finish with a 70PG/30VG result (note includes small VG additive and VG flavor). Sound right? Wife bought a 50/50nic and the calculator wont complete giving an error message. Only way I can get it to work is by using 100% PG nic (no VG nic in the base). Does this sound right???

I'm sure I'll have more questions later after much more reading, just wanted to get this lil matter cleaned up.

I'm just a DIY noob myself, but my experience regarding question 1 has been the opposite, most of the flavor concentrates I have come across are PG based. Some like the Lorann Naturals line say they contain both PG and VG on the label, but I couldn't get an answer from Lorann because apparently it is a "trade secret". Which kinda ...... me off. This is basic info needed for mixing.

Regarding question 2, if your using VG based flavors, you should be able to enter that in the calculator and it should spit out the right figures for you. Yeah you'd need more PG than VG.

I find that my VG is running out faster, because all the flavor concentrates I use (mostly TFA) are PG based.

Okay, so where is a good place to get (primarily) PG based flavoring?


EDIT: Okay, just went back to site (EcigExpress). Seems within the Sub-vendor section under DIY Flavorings that most of those are PG based. I guess my wife chose the ONE that was VG based (Nature's Flavors), LOL.

Any other good spots ....now that I've found some PG based. I'll need more good one's ;-)

TFa,cappella,loanns,favorwest are all pg based. I think favor art as well. You should be able to hit your ratios of pg/vg unless you are using a base that very close to your final mix. WHen you use a nic base that's too close to your final you can have issues hitting the ratio your trying to reach. AT a 50/50 base your flavors and additional pg will need to be 30% of final mix to end up with 70/30 pg.vg

Since you will only be doing single flavoring juice, the flavoring will most likely make up a small portion of the overall juice. Thus, the majority of the balancing between PG and VG will be done on the Base and Nic Base level.

I find most flavorings meant just for e-juice are PG while those meant for food or beverages are VG bassed. I use both, just put it in the calculator, or compensate accordingly if you do manual calculations.

Since you will only be doing single flavoring juice, the flavoring will most likely make up a small portion of the overall juice. Thus, the majority of the balancing between PG and VG will be done on the Base and Nic Base level.

A good place for TFA flavors is onestopdiyshop, but you can also buy from the TPA/TFA website directly.

@Calivapr123: Your difference is that you were using 100mg nic. As stated, wife purchased a single bottle of 50/50 36mg nic and using that value the calc doesn't work. It does using 100mg. Knowing what I know now....and finding the RIGHT PG flavors, it works out as well using our nic bottle.


OK - couple more questions.

* Using the same software, it generalized by stating flavor should 20% of mixture. Is this a basic rule of thumb as I've seen many threads where the value isn't even close. How does one tell on first attempt where to start? Is there a place where there is a general rule of thumb that a flavor shouldn't be over "x %" ....what about a 5 flavor blend, should that be at 20% total?

Also....wth is EM? I've seen that in many threads.

em = ethyl maltol, a sweetener at low doses, you can buy the crystals and dilute them in pg, or you can buy "cotton candy" flavoring, which is 10% ethyl maltol. Use it too high it tastes like burnt sugar, so tread lightly, 1-2% for sweetening.

Lots of flavors, lots of flavor percentages. Some are good at .5% like TFA Caramel Cappucino, some are good at 3-5% like many tobacco flavorings, and some like Capellas can go higher and not lose their flavor. You have to investigate them individually and then decide how you like the taste.

Last night I made a vanilla custard at over 30% total flavor, and an RY7 at 6% total flavor. Both are delicious!

Also there are Flavor Vendor specific threads all over. Try a recipe that sounds good and don't forget to steep. Go from there. I have only 1 marginal success at an original recipe so far and I have been at this going on 5 months. I have over 100$ worth of flavors so it could take awhile to sample them all and I haven't taken a math class in awhile but that is a lot of combinations.

Just keep at it and research. You are in the right place!
