Just started smoking Ecigs about two weeks ago and have significantly cut back on the real smoke. I'm down to about 2-3 smokes a day from close to 10-15. I'm enjoying the ecig more and more as I learn to smoke it better. I plan to cut back to one real smoke a day for a week, starting sunday, then cut them off completely.

One question I have though, is it common for a new ecig smoker to get a burned roof of mouth? The roof of my mouth feel sore and burned and it just started after smoking the ecigs. I haven't burned my mouth on any food or drinks that I can remember, so I'm thinking it could be the ecig.

One other question, what exactly does 'throat hit' mean? I've seen the term several times but can't find a good explanation.

Thanks!

I don't have any useful info about the mouth burning, but throat hit is the sensation or "sting" in the back of the throat and sometimes even in the lungs. It is kind of like the harshness of the vapor. It can be effected by amount of nicotine, the PG/VG ratio of the juice, the heat of the vapor, by the flavor ex menthol and cinnamon, and even the amount of flavor.

I don't know that it's common but I've read others with your issue. Drink lots of water.... like a camel getting ready to cross the desert.

Some call the throat hit how your lungs feel when you inhale. For me, it's that feeling at the back of my throat when I pull vapor into my mouth then inhale. During the inhale some juices have flavorings to give you a hit at the back of your throat. Some nic gives you a peppery feeling/tingle. I don't get it with all juices. At 24mg, my KBV waffle juice has no TH at all. At 18mg, I get a significant TH from JC's spiced apple cider - very strong in the back of the throat. I use that juice to overpower cig cravings. Works great.

For me it was the tongue. And some get sore throat or even lungs.

Nicotine in 100% PG can be irritating, and the more nicotine the more irritating. Nicotine is a skin irritant. PG is thin and makes thinner looking vapor, lets through the most flavor, most nicotine TH, most nicotine irritation. VG is thick (too thick for some methods of vaping) and it dulls everything PG lets through but makes thicker looking vapor.

If you are using 100% PG juice, try 80PG/20VG for stuffing cartomizers, 20-30% VG for reservoir cartos/tanks, 20-50% VG or more for a normal atomizer (as long as it flows at least as fast as you vape). That will smooth out the vape a bit and should relieve irritation. If you are using extreme nicotine (over 24mg) consider a better hotter ecig and less nicotine.

If you are using stuffing cartomizers, you can try using a drip tip as a mouthpiece instead of the end cap. The drip tip has a wider opening that will spread out the stream of vapor as it enters your mouth and you may position the ecig differently in your mouth. If you are vaping hands free with auto batteries then a drip tip may not be an option and the angle of the ecig may be aiming the incoming vapor right at the roof of your mouth.

And drink plenty of fluids. Vaping is more dying than smoking.

1) Yes water.
2) Better Juice - I've had some juice (VG actually) that caused mouth/lip irritation. Switched it out and everything was OK. Can't say for you... but switching vendors/e-liquid flavor is a good test.
3) TH is throat-hit... warmth/irritation that you feel in the throat... the opposite is 100% pure VG which is like vaping air... you can't tell that you inhaled anything by feel.
4) Be cautious if you have allergies/sensitivities to food flavorings and/or PG or VG.
5) FYI - you are not smoking... you are vaping. It isn't smoke. Legally, medically, or scientifically.

Good Luck.

I am using cartomizers on a Joye Ego battery. When you say use "80PG/20VG" what exactly does this mean? Does this mean i need to mix my juice with something? Could you ellaborate on this a bit?

It means the juice is made of 80% propylene glycol and 20% vegetable glycerin. Most reputable juice suppliers have a drop down list where you can choose different amounts of PG to VG. 80/20 and 70/30 is the most common that I see.

I experienced something similar when I made the switch except it was under the tongue for me, like the bottom part of my mouth. I went cold turkey for two weeks before getting my pv. It started during the two week period but after vaping it got slightly worse, idk if it was the vaping or if it would have gotten worse anyway. Since it started for me during the two week cold turkey period, I imagine it's part of detoxing from cigs.

I've recently started getting the burns on the roof of my mouth. Not sure what's changed. I've been vaping since Jan 2011 and have only started experiencing it the last 2 weeks. I'm using:
Joy e-Go with CE2 cartomizers XL Rev 5
High Caliber 50PG/50VG juice mix of: 13 drops Coffee Expresso 11mg with 3-5 drops of Caramel 1.2%

The only change I've made is the mix. I was using:
High Caliber 50PG/50VG juice mix of: 13 drops Coffee Expresso 11mg with 3-5 drops of Tiramisu 11mg

I've almost always gotten the occasional tip of the tongue & lip numbing. Wondering if it is a reaction to something in the Caramel?
