so I took a trip to a local ejuice shop. decided to add an ego passthrough battery to my collection. it's just a passthrough that can be disconnected and used as an actual battery on the go. I love this thing, it is beautiful, sleek, and I just really enjoy it. now my question, the owner of the shop told me that these passthroughs run at 5v when connected to a strong USB, and immediately run at 3.7v as soon as its unplugged. I've been reading alot online about how it's not true and just a false rumor going around about them. I can't notice too much of a difference but it does seem to hit alot better when plugged in. I've also read that these are in fact 5v when plugged in so I'm a little confused and not sure what to believe with these. some input would be great. thank you

For it to be 5v when plugged in it would have to bypass the battery and have a 5v regulator somewhere in the chain, I doubt that very seriously and I've never seen an Ego Pass Trough do that.

The ones I've seen are designed as with most pass throughs with an inline battery is your vaping from the battery all the time even when it's plugged in but when it's plugged in the battery is charging.

There are 5v pass throughs available without an inline battery pretty cheap but you'd need to get an adapter capable of 2amp or more output to power it. Most USB ports aren't designed for the amperage to fire an atty at 5v. Although it may or may not work without issue, you likely won't be getting a full 5v vape under load from a USB plugged into the computer.

My purely non-knowledge based guess (let me emphasize that) is that it is not possible with ego batteries as they are. I say this because the Ego booster which employs a boost circuit, tops out at 4.7v. I think you need a new power source (ie batteries which output more voltage) to get to 5v. That said, its not outside the realm of possibility that Joye or some other ODM will produce such a unit in the future. The only issue would be consumer liability and hazards associated with mass producing/selling high voltage power sources (eg exploding batteries).

Till then, you need to use straight (no battery) passthrough like the 5v 510 one that is for sale many places (the one that Nomoreash is referring to) or go the mod route to get to 5v.

thank you vocr, I had a feeling it wasn't 5v when plugged regardless this is my new favorite ego. the fact I can sit in my home with my ego constantly plugged it does seem to hit better, than its time to leave the house and just unplug and take out I'm good for the whole day with this 900 mAh battery. LOVE IT! gonna pick up another soon. 2 months till Christmas, can't wait to relax on a beautiful proVari ;)

I adore my eGo passthrough... couldn't be without it. I don't have a voltage meter thingie, so i can't tell you how mine runs. BUT I have recently seen Variable voltage eGo passthroughs popping up in stores...I'm not sure if that's the right way to describe it, but you can choose whether you want it to run at 650, 1000 etc. Could be one of those units that switches when its unplugged, maybe?

My pleasure BluSavage and I totally agree. I switched to passthroughs as soon as I got my first one. Still have 4 regular Ego 1000mah's sitting in my storage drawer in the original plastic wrapping :). It is so much more convenient for me, especially when traveling. Being able to just plug it into any of my existing mini usb charging apparatuses makes a world of difference.
