IDK, but maybe you should just feed him what he'll eat, to keep him alive, and make him comfortable... and work on the other stuff as you can. Don't need him dying from starvation. What does the Vet say about it.

Good idea. Once he starts eating, then try to switch over by introducing what ever a little at a time.
Friend just had to go through this with their cat and the cat is doing pretty good right now.

I don't even talk to them about diet anymore.....their training is sooooo very limited in the nutrition aspect..and what they do get is from big pet food companies....thus what they sell in their practice.
The only thing that he is religiously eating is treats...and ONLY the one's that I make. He won't even touch animal crackers or nilla wafers anymore. The only "prescription" crap that I give him now is the canned and only from Royal Canin cause he will eat it from time to time......but he gets it via syringe if he refuses everything else (such as my homemade meatloaf, kidney friendly stew, etc). He's at a stage right now where he feels bad....kinda like us having the flu. So he doesn't want to eat....have a few tricks that I'm trying right now to see if they will help with his blood levels and a few more options before I throw in the towel.

Now with that said, please don't think me heartless to how he feels....I have a rule of 3....if he has 3 really bad days in a row, that is when it will be time. We have not hit that yet....He will have 2 days in a row that are bad, but on day 3 he's good again and for longer than he is on the bad streak. But the food thing is driving me crazy. What he will eat today, may not be what he will eat tomorrow...and what he snubbed last week, may be what he WILL eat today  Very fickle.

Cats seem to be able to deal with kidney issues much better than dogs. Their bodies tend to respond better to treatments. I do hope your friends kitty continues for a long time on the good path

You're a true Heroine, Keela, and you are doing great!!! I applaud you. I know it's hard, and NO, I don't think you are Heartless. If you were, you'd have given up a long time ago. Some people don't take an animal to the Vet for ANYTHING. And Yes, if the time comes, I'm sure you'll have him put to sleep, so he passes Peacefully, but WE ALL Hope and Pray that it doesn't come to that.

   I'm sending as much Healing Energy as I can, to You and your Baby.

Thank You, hon. *muah*

Hardest part is that it was found by accident (bloodwork for a surgery)....but as soon as it was found and they had me give him that crappy food, it all went downhill from there. Struggling to get him to eat anything now.

Have you tried Nutri-cal? We've used it for sick pets. It's really sweet so they like it and it's very calorie and nutrient dense stuff. Comes in a tube and you can just squeeze it into a spoon or even right on your hand for them to lick off.

I figure he will let me know when he's ready....and I promised all my fur babies that I would never keep them for my own selfish need....

The cat is 18 years old. I have known her since she was a baby. Pet parents are just enjoying the time that she has left.

I know how you feel about your dog. I sort of went through the same thing with mine. She was feeling bad almost daily. I had her in for a check up six months before and they said there wasn't anything wrong with her. I kept telling myself she was just getting old even if my heart and mind kept saying different.
Enjoy and love and pray your furbaby gets better.
I will say a prayer too.
Again. (((hugs)))

No....it has cod liver oil and extra vit A on top of that.....one of the vitamins that these dogs don't tolerate well.....too hard on the kidneys to get rid of the excess. And the added Phosphorus is also a no no in kidney pets.

If it were just the Phos.....I could deal with that with some extra binder, but the Vit A is too risky for toxicity :(

But....I will keep that link for future reference if I have any other kinda issues with any of my other fur babies

{{{{{Huggles}}}}} Thank you.

I will say, that I do have a wonderful vet. She is supportive in anything I want to do...except the diet area....but only cause she doesn't know enough about it. She is honest about that fact though.....she only knows what limited info they were given.
