Hey guys, off cigs for 5 weeks now. Just curious...

I picked up a Ego-t upgrade starter kit. Came with 2 1000mah batteries and a few clear tanks.

I picked up a couple of T3S with 2.5ohm coils inside. Was running these with the Ego-T in VV (between 3.6v-4.15v depending on charge). After reading a bit, i decided to go with a 1.8ohm head and run the battery at 3.3v. It seems like a good vape, but im burning through wicks like crazy. The last coil lasted about 2 days on normal use before the wick is black.

Is it just the 1.8ohm dont last? I mean, its not even close to what the 2.5ohms seem to last.

Hi DomChin, welcome to the ECF.

3.3v on those 1.8ohm coil heads sounds right to me, you can run them higher if it tastes good to you.

When the wicks go black, they are not burning but usually the sugars in the juice you are vaping are burning and depositing on the wick. The wicks are made of silica and the coil simply cannot produce enough heat to burn them. (don't believe me, take a lighter to a wick and try to set it on fire)

So all you need to do is give them a good clean. You can take them out, run them under very hot water, shake them off and let them dry for an hour or two and they should be good to go. I usually do this every 2-4 refills.
Every few days I will also do a dry burn which helps to clean the coil and will also burn those deposits off the wicks. If you want to dry burn, it's simple.

Rinse the head, shake it off and dry the connection (where it screws into the battery) well. Screw the head on to your battery without the tank / clearomizer attached. Pulse your fire button for a few seconds and blow gently down the tube. Keep doing this - you'll see some wisps of smoke coming out which is normal - until you see the coil head inside the tube glow red.
Take off the head again and give it a final rinse and dry.

You should be able to do this a good few times. I can make a coil head last for a month or more just with regular clean / dry burn cycle.

Oh, wow...thanks for that info. I tossed the others away, but kept 1.

I just took the coil apart to see if i could wash it off. I pulled the 2 flavor wicks out and rinsed them. Some of the black came off, but in the middle its still pretty bad. I tried to clean it, but it was still pretty black in there.

Dry-burn it to remove the gunk.

Install the head in the tanks base, then with stem/flavor wicks removed, put it on a batteru and pulse it for 2-3 seconds, pause, then again, till the coils start glowing evenly and the silica wick stops smoking, you notice the wick turns back to white.

If you have water in your wicks it may take a second to burn it out before the gunk starts to burn off.

Once done dry burning, rinse it out, install new/old flavor wicks, reassemble, and vape.

Keep in mind if you dont dry after rinsing it will take a few puffs before it burns off the water and starts vaping properly.

I used to use a setup very similar to this. I used an Ego C Upgrade with a Kanger Evodd tank and 1.8 ohm atomizers. First of all, this is what I recommend EVERYONE that asks me about electronic cigarettes to start with as it is small and the 3.3 volt output with the 1.8 ohm atomizer is perfect.

I concur with InTheShade that you can clean them. I used to soak them overnight in a glass of Vodka, rinse them in hot water and then let them dry. This DOES work, so I always kept my old atomizers just in case. That being said, the cleaned atomizers did not last very long and the I didn't get the full flavor that I did with new ones. IMO, buy 5-10 1.8 ohm atomizers at a time and have a few different Kanger tanks for different flavors.

Hope this helps!

I was kind of disappointed when I started this whole thing, and my local shop was telling me that I needed to throw out my CE4s when the wicks were "burnt".

Did some research, learned about dry burns and the real science behind silica wicks and coils, and have saved some money and frustration! The "disposable" clearomizer I started with isn't exactly like new after a clean and dry burn, but it's like night and day compared to the gunky one, and totally usable while I wait on my evods. It takes patience, but it works!

One more thing, the title of the thread says "Kanger Protank 2". Are you using a T3 or a Protank? I only ask because IMO, the Evodd's/T3's are much better tanks. My buddy ordered a Protank 2 whilst I ordered an Evodd. We used them both when they came in and we both agreed the Evodd produced a much better vape. We got more flavor, a better throat hit, and a better overall Vape from the Evodd. (We both were using the Ego C Upgrade)
