Hi, new member here from Surrey, UK.

I smoked for around 15 years and stopped straight away almost a month ago after buying my first kit, an iStick TC40W and Nautilius Mini 2 from a local vape shop. I couldn't believe how easy it made giving up analogs within a couple of days, but I fear I've substituted a smoking addiction for another one - buying far too much vaping gear! I think my most recent addition, an iJoy Captain and smok Big Baby Beast will be the last for a little while I experiment with different liquids. My favourite so far is Just Jam Raspberry.

I'm keen to give coil building and DIY juice a go in time, partly out of interest and also to help keep costs down.

Browsing these forums has already been an invaluable resource so far and I hope to contribute back in some way as I get some more experience behind me.

Hi and welcome! Glad you're off to a smooth start. Doing stuff like building your own coils can be fun (sometimes) but is really good for saving on factory coils. DIY is dead simple once you know what types of flavors you like and a plan for some recipes to try. As you're a little less than a month off cigs, I'd wait a while longer, be sure you stay off the smokes, then read a lot and start off slow. The deep end of the pool will still be there.

Welcome to the forum. I can relate! June 16 2pm put out my last cigarette before walking into a local vape shop on a mission. I'd done a fair amount of research and pretty much knew what I wanted to buy. Got a Smok Stick V8 and some Turkish Blend tobacco juice and ended my 48 years 1 1/2 to 2 pad smoking career. 7 hours later I knew it was for real, hadn't craved a single stinky, and ordered a backup Stick V8 online.

Got the hang of the Stick V8s capabilities and found that it ran a bit hotter fresh off charge in the morning then mellowed out pretty much the rest of the day. Decided I wanted wattage control and started researching. Decided on the new Smok GX2/4 since like both an Alien and a 350 whether running in 2 or 4 battery mode. Had it now day 5 and love it. Of course a backup GX2/4 now on order too lol.

I still only have one of the two Stick V8s because last Monday a friend who'd been following my quitting decided to go for it. (He'd only smoked for 11 years, much younger than me.) So I started him with my backup Stick V8 a couple days before my GX2/4 arrived. Decided more important to get him started and risked a couple days without a backup. He's now 10 days cigarette free I'm on day 19.

Welcome aboard ecf, cdbee. I have not been here long and am here to make online friends too.

I have only been vaping 8-9 months. I smoked for 48 years off and on, mostly on. Vaping has helped me to become smoke free. I am a quick study and into DIY of my coils and juice. I have been spending way too much on vaping gear. Got so much now as I picked us a few Huge lots on eBay. Guess I need to resell the stuff I don't use. If I did not DIY I would have spend about that much on Juice and coils. Well,OK, 1/2 that much. lol

Welcome CDBee, and congrats on switching over to vaping! I too want to learn DIY and coilbuilding, since over the pond here, there are.... unknown exactly time frames on what is going to happen, exactly, so what I've been doing is reading as much as I can (the pinned threads can be great sources of info) and asking ppl.... I just purchased my first RDA/RDTA? (I think I'm using the right acronyms) on sale, as it appeared to be a great place for a klutz to start. I doubt I'll be building completely for awhile, but it DID look like a good place (for me) to start. To me, DIY juice seems a lot easier, especially using commercially available juices.... I plan to start there. :)

I refuse, however, to do any of that until my nic brain/bad luck from quitting smoking, ah, amps itself up/down a little. For now, I'm enjoying just vaping, learning, and collecting, probably won't do much until after the first 30 days or so. But you will find invaluable support and resources here, it's a great site, Welcome! :)

About spending, you will probably need vape backup equipment if your present set fails or gets lost. But don't feel bad, look at this member:

It's strange, I've got bored of some 'hobbies' in the past but I can tell that if I ever no longer vape it won't be because I've gone back to analogs. The thought of them makes me feel queasy, and although I've still got loads in the house (I used to stock up cheaply every time I went abroad) they provide no temptation whatsoever.

I've been drinking, been around smokers, had a couple of friends offer me one forgetting I'd given up etc. I've just got no desire whatsoever. I don't know if vaping helps with the psychological aspect, the nicotine or most likely both, but it's the push I needed to get me over that initial hump. Only wish I'd given it a go sooner!

That's great you're playing a part in helping others pack in the cigarettes! I don't know a huge pool of smokers but I have recommended to a handful.

I used to be quite defensive when questioned / criticised about smoking so I'm trying not to be pushy, rather just subtly be positive and enthusiastic about my own experience.

I've noticed there's a success stories thread about personal experiences, could be interesting too to hear stories of people who have helped others transition away from analogs if there isn't a thread already.

I don't know if the guy who spent $800 in 2 months is a cautionary tale or a target to beat?!

Sounds like a lot of money but in reality that's the equivalent of a pack of analogs a day over 2 months at UK prices which puts it into perspective.

Well, that's the logic I use when I justify investing in more gear any way!

E liquids here are now only sold in 10ml bottles but I've got about 50 either full or on the go as I experiment with flavours i like so I'll let these dwindle down a bit before I take the plunge with DIY juices.

On first glance though the links look very useful for when the time comes, thanks for sharing them.

eBay can be very dangerous, especially if you feel a bit artificially richer through no longer spending on analogs!

Congratulations on becoming smoke free, that's some achievement after 48 years!

Anna

I was oblivious until recently to the fight against vaping, and only started myself shortly after new regulations came in here in Europe to limit tank sizes, e juice bottle sizes and nicotine base max % amongst other things.

If it leads the likes of you or I to experiment with DIY then that could be a good unintended consequence.

Good luck with making smoking a distant memory!

Welcome to the funny farm :w00t: .......... Yes, you will find that DIY will GREATLY reduce your vaping costs.... Congrats on quitting the death sticks.

Thanks!

It is clear from many of the forums here though that people say DIY reduces your costs but really they mean it frees up money to spend on more hardware!
