I read about the tarnishing of the copper vein. I trust myself to spray clear coat nicely - not at all. JWraps has a clear wrap, what do you folks think about the clear wrap as an alternative to clear coat? I have used JWraps successfully on other devices, so I know I can put them on without problem. Any thoughts?

Thanks,
CMD

The Jwrap for the Reo doesn't cover the entire Reo the front sides by the door are open. The problem is the oils from your hands make it tarnish so having the two strips on either side of the door will turn to almost black over time as well as the area around the button. Clear coat is the best option. Screw in a 510 adapter, run some thread around the adapter, and hang it up, spray 3 or 4 very light coats on it. You're good to go.

The Copper Vein is just to beautiful to cover up. If you don't think you can do the clear coating, I'd get someone that has plenty of experience using spray paint to do it. It's not really hard to do. I've clear coated mine two different times now, and have had no problems. Yes, it's a little nerve wrecking, but in the end... it's well worth it. I personally will clear coat every Reo I get to keep the paint protected.

Here's a link to some notes I took while doing mine.

I've been using rustoleum clear enamel coating. Works like a charm.

In fact I've become quite obsessive with spraying my copper vein that it now has a pretty thick coating, such that I've dropped it a couple of times and all that chipped off was just the clear enamel coating. Very pleased.

This response is not meant to offend anyone here and if I have offended you, I apologize in advance...

I clear coated a black circle door that I bought a while back. The reason I did this is because of the wrinkle finish on the door was a little too abrasive for my holster that I carry my grand in. The door kept catching on the inside of the holster and wanted to come off whenever I was putting it in or taking it out of the holster. The clear coat corrected the problem and gave it a smooth surface. Do keep in mind the clear coat will wear off with some use though. I thought I was good to go as I had something like 5-6 coats on it over a 2 day period. It only took about 3 weeks for the coating to wear through around the squonk hole and the top of the door where I would place my thumb to slide the door off for battery changes and juice fills... I have completely removed what was on there and now the wrinkle finish is worn smooth so I really don't need the coating on there. No big deal now, but just know that it will wear off with use and keep an eye for that.

I'm trying to understand this correctly, so hand the Reo by a basic 510 adapter (to cover the port) and use a clear spray paint style coating over the entire mod, getting all around it as it hangs? What type of clear coat style spray paint would you recommend?

How did you end up clear coating it? Hanging by the 510 and spraying around evenly? How difficult is it to get it even while using a spray paint can? Also what type of spray paint based clear coat did you use/what was it's name?

I've been using rustoleum clear enamel coating. Works like a charm.

Thanks for the input on the type of clear coat. Did the rustoleum come in a spray can? How did you spray it evenly? How long does it take to dry approx.?

What I'm basically asking is what is the best method for clear coating (I'm assuming a spray paint can style so that it can go in as even as possible), what brand/type of clear coat is best, where is the best place to buy this (homedepot/lowes style store?) and how much will it affect the texture/thickness/feel of my currently non coated Reo Copper Vein? Sorry about all the newbie questions!! I just received my first Reo--in copper vein, and would like to get this done asap. The color and texture are absolutely perfect :) I want to keep it this way.

Thanks guys!!

Yes Rustolium or Krylon clear coat in a spray can from any hardware store. The key is don't try to do it in one heavy coat, it will run. Spray three light coats or more. Follow directions on can for timing between coats.

Also very important, as your spray back and forth, do not change directions over the Reo do this out in space. When you change directions this lays down more paint in that spot and this is where you'll get a run. Doing it to the side and not over what your painting lets you avoid creating a heavy spot.
