My mother in law just got a pack of cigarettes and she is freaking out because of the new law that requires tobacco companies to implement a new paper that causes the cigarette to stop burning at least 3 times during the length of the cigarette.

So no regular smokers will have to re light their cigarette 3 or more times.

Sounds like just another reason to switch to the e-cig

good idea, o2 tanks and burning embers don't mix.

true story, a women was being treated for lung cancer in a hospital where she was not allowed to smoke. She was put into an oxygen tent every day as part of her treatment. She had an idea one day that as the oxygen tent was ventilated she could easily have a crafty cigarette inside and no-one would be any wiser. she snuck in a cigarette and lighter.....you can imagine the rest.

Saltpetre is used for that (Pottasium Nitrate). I believe it's in the paper, and possibly also in the tobacco. Roll your own tobacco goes out if left unattended (without saltpetre), but tailor made cigarettes do not go out (they contain saltpetre).

A couple of things to note with Saltpetre:

1) It's one of the three key ingredients in gunpowder (along with sulphur and carbon).

2) I believe it has been used by navies around the world, in the days of sail and LONG voyages. They used to sprinkle it on the sailor's food to inhibit sex drive, supposedly to stop the lads from getting too keen on each other during the dog watch. Might be an urban myth. Scary enough to mention. :(
