Hi all,

This linked article has been bought to my attention by a friend. The article written for a site called realfarmacy.com claims that a study has found that second hand vapor (called smoke in the article) is harmful.

The article also speaks of toxic particles that get lodged into the lungs and are the size of nanometres.

I copy and paste the article following:

The trendy e-cig may not be as “safe” as originally thought. A new study shows that they contain volatile organic compounds, acetone, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, benzopyrene as well as silicate and various metal particles. The German Cancer Research Center, Heildelberg calls the e-cigarette, “An uncontrolled experiment with Consumers.”
Electronic cigarettes are not emission-free. E-cigarettes contain volatile organic substances, including propylene glycol, flavors and nicotine, and are emitted as mist or aerosol into indoor air. Study showed that these ultrafine liquid particles of less than 2.5 micrometer in diameter may penetrate deeply into the lungs. Study further showed that these e-cigarettes produce substantially fewer ultrafine particles than conventional cigarettes, however, the substances emitted by e-cigarettes may be inhaled by non-users when used indoor. Second-hand exposure to e-cigarette emission which may lead to adverse health effects cannot be excluded says the German Cancer Research Center, Heildelberg.
The study goes on to say that the findings revealed the following about the emissions of e-cigarette: a) besides glycol (the main ingredient), nicotine, flavors, tobacco-specific nitrosamines, volatile organic compounds, acetone, formaldehyde. acetaldehyde, benzo(a)pyrene as well as silicate and various metal particles are present, and b) the particle size is between I00 and 600 nanometers, which is comparable to the particle size found in tobacco smoke of conventional cigarettes. The levels of most harmful substances are lower in thee-cigarettes than in conventional cigarette smoke, but they do accumulate in indoor air.
Not that anyone needed a study to tell them that inhaling unknown vapors is unhealthy, but it is good to know that it does produce “secondhand” harms so people can take precautions around their children and others. The one thing that we can definitely count on from this study is that it will not be long before the state begins violating the property rights of business owners by mandating that they disallow e-cig smoking on their private property.

I would like to get some opinions on this from anyone who knows a bit about previous studies done.

Personally, the only feedback I can trust is the feedback my body gives me. Since I started vaping my immune system seems to have improved significantly and I have not been sick with a cold or flu in months. When I was a smoker I got sick regularly and the illnesses would be prolonged. I have lost my smokers cough entirely and my skin tone has improved. My cardiovascular fitness has improved noticably as well.

The report from Germany you refer to, AnthonyB, has been pretty much discredited as agenda-driven junk science. Unfortunately, these studies are all too common these days, as the anti-tobacco cohorts scramble to find (or concoct) evidence that vaping is dangerous.

Be skeptical, and inform yourself. And vape on!

Totally agree about the debunked study in question, and with CES and AgentAnia. Here's a study that analyzes the exact chemical composition in exhaled vapor that you should review, i.e., 95% PG and VG with 5% nicotine, and specifics regarding NOT FINDING MOST OF THE CHEMICALS IN QUESTION, of which I believe 28 of them were specifically looked for:

Vapor Test Results by Korea Electronic Cigarette Association

This study was shown by ECF member TomCatt, again largely PG and VG:

When reviewing any studies, one must look carefully about those that produce the study. As a full time cancer (and other disease) researcher for a major institution, I run across the bias in medical studies every day. Many studies are done by Govt and private industry to produce a certain outcome. The FDA has been a political organization since at least the 1970's, and even their studies on tobacco are heavily biased. It is possible to construct experiments to produce virtually any outcome desired. Try as they may, few if any studies can show the aerosols/vapor from e-cigs harmful as the chemicals are not there to start with, and no combustion is taking place that produce additional compounds, as you see in cigarette smoke. For example, cigarettes begin with over 500 chemicals and then combust to create a total of about 4,000 chemicals. This mechanism of action does not even exist with vaping. As recommended, be skeptical about any study on any subject, consider the source, and apply common sense, if not accurate scientific analysis.

Edit: Additional Information
A defective or contaminated delivery device can introduce contamination into the vapor (aerosol, condensate, etc.) as there is significant heat present near metals and plastics in some devices. This is not vaping. This is an additional variable about contamination, not about chemicals in vapor.

Good post, Ania. This study is just like the FDA study back in 2009 that stated eliquid had dangerous substances in it but failed to mention the substances found in only a few samples were at the same levels as found in approved NRT products like nic gum and inhalers.

Dr. Siegel's response was spot on.
