I have just one question...is this going to cause some threads and memories to disappear into a black hole never to be seen again, as has happened before?

They are not changing the software, just adding different themes(?)

If I am reading all this correctly. So it should not effect the content. The last time, they actually changed the software.

It required moving files from one platform to another. That was a HUGE undertaking!

OK, to attempt to assuage nerves! Yes, this is absolutely not a change to the core software. It's a theme which, while it does do some things (mainly on the "client side") that the old theme cannot, is not a substantive change to the forum.

If you look at the ECF Material theme right now, you'll notice that every function from the old theme is preserved. And for those that want it, I will leave the old theme up - although it will become unsupported and I can't promise it won't get broken over time.

That said (!).....

I've been doing an awful lot of digging recently on exactly how this forum is used, by members and guests. My conclusion? We need to do some radical consolidation of forums.

Here's the issue - while it appears sensible to organise topics into forums, and to create forums around fine-grained topic areas, this simply creates friction for people using the forum.

There are better ways of doing this, and I want us to find what they are.

You can please some of the people some of the time but you can't please all of the people all of the time.

Too true! And to prove it, I'll just say, I like the font and font size you started out with, but not the current iteration very much at all. Okay, I'll zipper it now, and let you get on with it. :)

Thinking it might be fun to autogenerate avatars. Or maybe have a limited set of vape icons (I have a really nice set) as placeholders.
I'm not sure what you mean by autogenerate avatar, but I would not be pleased if anyone but myself chose my avatar. I love the black page. The white frame on some of the emoji's is a bit annoying.

It would be only for those that do not make their own avatar. Those of us that do have our own would not be affected.

It will probably be when a new member joins, they may be able to chose from a list? Then when they figure out how to make their own changes, they will be able to do so. We do like our members having their own individual style. It is what makes us unique as individuals ;)

I've been giving this some thought on how best to go about it, and to be honest it might be good to have, rather than separate forums, some sticky threads in each forum covering some specific topics which people can reply and ask specific thread related questions in.

I'll be giving it some more thought though on how it might work best - ease of use, not too much clutter etc and give a detailed description if I can come up with a good comprehensive format suggestion.

My biggest thought, the one which keeps going over in my head is this, I'm sure glad I'm not you! Hahaha

Thank you for explaining. I'm at work, so no real play time. Have been on dark version and my eyes are so happy!

One minor thing, Alerts.

I used to be able to mouse over the "Alert" notification and it would bring up a list. Now I actually have to click on it to see what the alert is.

Like I said, a minor thing but definitely more clicks needed.
My alert drop down is working. I'm not having to click.

I feel really stupid but I can't find ECF Material. Oliver said it's at the bottom of the forum...what forum?

I'd love to take a look at it but I have to ask why change this layout if it ain't broke? I hate change for change's sake.
At the very bottom of this page, on the left hand side. It says ECF if you are using the normal format. Click on that and you will get options. The newest is ECF Material (hopefully only a working title LOL )

My alert drop down is working. I'm not having to click.
My alert in the new theme is a red circle with a number in it. I have to click a couple of times to get the "Alert" list to show. In the old standard theme, I would only have to 'mouse over' for a drop down list with all the alerts showing.

After you posted, I thought it might be because I have ECF on a split screen. I expanded it to go full monitor but still have the same behavior.

Okay, I'm in I'm gonna check this sucker out, but later, after yoga. I'm kinda interested.... I agree on the number of subforums being lessened, I do think that sometimes, we can learn from each other... I mean, I can equally find out about coil building in the coilbuilding section, the RTA/RDA/RTDA all have similar things, etc. I think that's a nice idea. Maybe. ;)
