ok so i got my octopus RBA. it was cheap and i wanted to get a head start on making my own coils. my wick and wire here yet so the stock made coil will have to do for a few days. works great, flavor is outstanding. vapor is ok, about on par with a vivi. i find that the wicks don't use all the juice though. it starts getting dry, i open to take a look and the wicks are pretty saturated still so kinda odd. coil is coming in at 1.8ohms. have it set to about 3.8v. other then the wicks not using all the juice its great love it. bye clearos.
do i need to give it a few seconds to re-saturate the wick area where the coil is before i take another toot? i know this stock setup is kinda lame so forgive me. playing the mail man stock game this week.

Can you post a picture of the stock coil? I am guessing it is a higher gauge wire and your wick may be somewhat choked. Just make sure the coil is directly lined up with the air inlet hole, and you should be able to run higher voltage for even more flavor and vapor. I know the stock photos of the octopus look like they come with way too much wick crammed in there, so you may be able to trim it up a bit so less juice gets trapped in it.

Since you have a regulated mod, you'll want to get your resistance just above 1.3 ohms, or whatever the specific cutoff is.

Just ordered an octopus tonight. Figured it was a good gateway RBA.

It's been 2 days and the stock coil has burned up already on the octopus. Looks like my kanthal and wick come today so, time to start building. What you guys recommend for this rba? I got 32kanthal with 3mm wick. Should I go duel coil? Might be a little tough for me becuase I am still a newbie when it comes to rebuilding.

Get good at wrapping single coils, then once its too easy start on dual coils and double wire coils. Good luck! Feel free to report back with results and pictures if you want.

I shall dont you worry. Have a dumbs question, I know what a hot spot is but what causes it and what can I do to avoid them?

You won't have to worry about them too much with soft wicks, they mostly apply to hard wicks like ss mesh and ceramic. They simply come from a gap between the wire and the wick. So wrap nice consistent coils and make sure your wick completely fills them without being tight (chokes juice flow). If you see a little gap, sometimes you can crush the coil down a little with some tweezers. You will detect hotspots from glowing coils while firing a wet wick or burnt flavor.

ok so i wasted a lot of kanthal and a lot of wire. for some reason everyone i watched build a coil with 32g 4-5 wraps got them around1.9-2.2ohms well so i thought. first time i wrapped it i got 2.9 with 5 wraps. sucked scrapped it. then went down to 4 wraps got 2.5 was like dam. sucked so i scrapped that one. went down to 3 wraps and 1.5ohms perfect! was looking for 1.8ish but just for some reason couldnt get it. i messed up a bunch of times by bending the wire and the wraps were too tight, all in all bad first attempt. wasted a solid 2ft of wire and wick. finally got it and this is what it looks like. i stuck with the original design for now. image.jpg

Just a quick suggestion... Try using less wick. Two strands should work fine, and even a single strand may wick fast enough if the coil isn't too tight on it. Then you can get more wraps and fine tune a little easier.

I'm sorry to hear you went through so much wick and wire trying to set this up. If you kept all of the failed attempts (didn't throw them in the trash), you can uncoil, clean them up a little, straighten everything out and reuse everything. It's tougher than using fresh material, but its good practice and it doesn't cost anything. That's what I do, and keep in mind that sometimes the recovered bits of wick and wire just get too mangled to successfully reuse.
