hello everyone, as mentioned in the title I am new to this forum, but I've been lurking for a while. I was an analog smoker for 4 years and recently quit the stinkies with the help of ecigs and determination. I am currently using both the iTaste vv/vw v3.0 and a caravela clone. the caravela is where my questions reside:

it had not been rewicked since I got it about a month ago, I tried doing it myself using some reference from when I watched the clerk build my coil set up (three pegs, two coils, 6 wraps on each 26g kanthal I believe.) and it was working until I started to get a little burned taste with my vape so I decided to change the cotton out. while changing it I noticed a black/dark brown residue on my coils and (I know this is a very common thing and also a very common question) I dry fired it, with the old wick already removed and there was a small POP and a sizable shower of sparks which I guessed was the residue because the one coil is clean and looks like new. I was wondering what actually happened and why the new wick tastes like..well...feet sort of. it's a funky taste. both coils fire properly and have even heat distribution emanating from the center of the coil outwards so I don't think I shorted out my battery or anything. thank you in advance for helping me shed some light on my situation. :ohmy:

In my experience (I've only been using RBAs for about 2 months now). I use a Kayfun/provari. The Kayfun is dual coils at 1.1 ohm. I
I dry burn and replace the cotton wick with every refill. Depending on what juice is I'm vaping it'll pop and spark a tad. When the coils start building residue despite the dry burn I'll lightly scrub them with a little distiller water when they Re still hot to make sure the residue is gone. And once a week I'll put the Kayfun in a container with distiller water and white vinegar to soak for about an hour; take it out, dry it with a clean rag and dry burn the deck again just to ensure there is no water.
You may have some residue on the inside of a coil or perhaps some burn residue build up someplace or it may be time for a new coil.

No worries, hope it helps I don't have much more experience than you do, just mind of a learn as you go sort of thing.
But I've heard of people getting 2-3 months out of a coil, i tend to get bored and change them for ....s and giggles after a couple weeks

Gotcha;
Youll get it there. Just takes some time and the littlest thing can make the biggest dofference. The underside rod the chimney too is another place you may wanna look at cleaning- just thought of that one.

I'll definitely be getting to the bottom of it when I get home from work. I'll let you know what it was.

I would def boil your cotton before re-wicking as that can def be a source of off-tasting vapor. Also wash your hands to remove any oil or dirt before you handle the cotton, you should keep it as clean as possible. Also, here is a very easy and fast way to get those coils clean, courtesy of RipTrippers-->

-Best of Luck-

It sounds like the only thing you have left to really do is completely disassemble the unit. As in everything, even the posts that hold the coil in place. Soak all the parts in water and white vinegar or water and vodka for a couple of hours. Rinse with distilled water and let dry.
Then rebuild it, put in a new coil and wick and start over.

I know it sucks, I had to do it to my first one. Apparently some machining oil was still in the deck between the insulator and the block.
Sucked royally and made mothers milk taste like mt baker juice
