If you're totally newbish, you might want to skip a variable for now. First off, they're going through a revolution and in a few months you'll be in a better position to choose between some very excellent options at great prices. Secondly, you need something to learn on a little bit so that the list of what you consider "layman's terms" will grow to be much longer for you. Thirdly, you always need a backup unit anyway, so whatever you get now can serve as a backup when you "graduate", should you decide to do so.

So, that said. How much do you smoke? Is it important that your e-cig look like a cigarette? If the answer to those questions are 1) less than a pack or so per day AND 2) Yes, than get a Volt from smokelessimage.com
Generally speaking anything that looks like a cigarette performs dismally and the batteries don't last. So you find yourself constantly swapping and charging batteries. Eventually, you will find yourself with 2 dead batteries and you'll be fighting your husband/wife over the one good battery that remains. Or, you'll be running into the night in search of a pack of smokes.

If you don't need a cigarette lookalike, a kGo or an e-Power is an ideal starter kit. Look at all the threads in this section from new vapers who got a kGo. You'll find few, if any, complaints. It has common 510 style threading so you can use a wide variety of juice delivery devices (cartomizers, clearomizers, etc.) A kit comes with 2 kGos so you can use one while the other recharges, and the batteries last a long time, about 8-10 hours for an average vaping pace.

The e-Power is similar except that it has replaceable batteries like a flashlight and it's slightly larger than the kGo. When the battery wears out for good, as all batteries do, you can just get a new one for a few bucks instead of buying a whole new e-cig the way you would with the kGo.

Both of these units are reasonably priced at about $50 or so. They are about the size of a Sharpie marker pen or a smaller cigar. The kGo comes in different colors as well, including pink which is a fave of the ladies. I'm assuming you're not planning on one kit for both of you to share? That's not a very good idea, in case that's what you have in mind.

Crystal clear vaping has the e-Power kit for $57 including 2 batteries, charger, a pack of cartomizers, 30ml of juice and free shipping.

You can get the kGo just about anywhere. Hoosierecigsupply.com is a good vendor that has them in stock most of the time.

Hello Sparalis and welcome to the party !

Where to start ? that could be many many places. depends on what you want right now. Most newbies want something that still feels like the cigarette they used to smoke ( known as analogs ) .... Its a simple battery with refillable cartomizers which means you need to buy ejuice as well to refill them ( prefilled cartos are not so tasty in my opinion.0... if that sounds good.... start here : This is a simple 510 battery kit that has better then normal batteries and comes with some nice cartomizers.

GotVapes Vision VOLT Karma - 450mah Fat 510 Stick Style - CHROME [gv-VOLTKarmaKit-Chrome] - $42.95 : GotVapes.com, E-cigarette Supplies - Atomizers Cartomizers Mods Juice and more

If you want something with more power that will have longer battery life and also give you a better selection of what types of cartomizers you can use on it... start here :

KGO kit1100mAh by SLB

The KGO is an Ego style ( 510 threads ) setup that will give you the most flexibilty. With this kit I recommend getting some smoktek 1.7 ohm ressurector cartomizers. You can find them at Crystal Clear Vaping .com Hes a great guy and ships very fast. I also highly recommend getting some Ego Vision cartomizers ( clearomizers ).

These are 2 great sources for ejuice :

VapeDudes.com - Hand-Crafted Gourmet & Organic eJuice - 100% USA Ingredients

E Cig Juice @ *_Highbrow Vapor_* - E Liquid Store, Shop our Store for Ecig Products.

I saw you mentioned variable voltage as well. If youre a " start at the top" kinda guy... Go for the Provari2. It's one of the very best out there. However I would suggest you start with the KGO and and get used to the vaping world and how all this works before jumping to vari volt.

You could however also order whats called an EGO Twist. This is an Ego style connection ( 510... same as KGO ) yet has the ability to be set from 3.2 volts up to 4.8 volts. Variable voltage will help you dial in your " sweet spot" based on what ohm rating your cartomizer is. The KGO and the 510 are both 3.7 v devices that weaken as you use them

Keep in mind too.... this IS NOT the last set of devices youre gonna buy, trust me on that. So start simple and work your way up. You will have a better appreciation and understanding for all this if you do.

Lastly.... drink plenty of water... vaping dehydrates !

Hang on tight.... the ride starts here.

I would suggest a different way to go altogether. Try going with a KR808 battery based kit, very basic and very simple. Then, start off by spending your money at first on sampler packs of pre-filled cartomizers and work on finding the juice that suits you best before going on to anything more complicated.

To me, the flavor, amount of vapor and throathit were the main aspects of vaping that got me off cigarettes and firmly on ecigs. I found that these were more characteristics of the juice itself than the hardware.

thanks everyone i ended up buying a 510 system but i am allready looking to upgrade to the kgo,it seeems to be recomended alot allthouth there are hardcore ego people also,So now i will be asking where would you go beyond a kgo,or could this be the last stop, or will i look for more,oh yeah were heavy smokers who like heavy vape.

The kgo could be the last stop. Probably not, but it could be. I'm a heavy vaper and stayed with a fixed voltage 3.7V device for 18 months before I upgraded to variable voltage. The kGo is just like the eGo, except usually cheaper and it's more powerful than the ego because it operates at between 4.1 and 3.7 volts, as compared to the ego's 3.4V. That voltage difference is significant, resulting in about a 20% increase in power at the coil, where it matters. You can find eGos with 3.7V, but they are not as common. If you do find one, make sure it has the same sized battery, 1100mah, as the kGo.
The new eGo Twist is a (somewhat) variable voltage unit that's realatively inexpensive an is getting good reviews. The only drawback is that you really need something else to vape while the battery is charging because, unlike the other eGo and kGo kits, you only get one of them so you can't vape one while the other is recharging.

Beyond the kGo, eGo or e-Power (which takes separate, replaceable batteries), the sky's the limit. You can get a more durable or advanced fixed voltage device like a Silver Bullet, or a "bottom feeder" like a Reo, or go to a variable voltage device. With VV PVs, you can get anything from a $30 box mod to a $70 Lavatube to a $200 Provari or Reo VV.
