Hi,

I am new to vaping, my first experience come from a cheap e-cigarette I brought from dealextreme with an order just to try. While the cheap e-cig lasted only 1 day I loved the experience and want to buy a better model and I have some question.

1) what are the good model to buy ? So far the 510 ans ego model have catch my eye, those are good model ?

2) Where to buy part for mod, like a batteries/atomiser connector ?
I have 6 18650 Li-Ion battery laying around, I want to use them to make a simple mod first and later maybe an adjustable RMS current mod adapted from a buck-boost circuit or a simple PWM driver.

3) where to buy ? I am from Canada I know there a restriction (not illegal but package can be refused and return to the expeditor).

-3b are only the e-juice controlled by custom ? or the hardware also regulated ?

4) Can a moderator allow me to post in the canadian subforum to ask about my Canadian related issue ;)

Thx

Eric

Hey, Thales! Welcome to ECF and vaping! To answer your questions:

1) If you're looking to vape for the longhaul, go ahead and spring for the eGo starter kit. The battery has a higher mAh rating than the standard 510 slim style, which means the battery lasts longer before needing a recharge.

2) Be careful trying to tinker around with making your own mods. Fiddling with electrical components and seriously powerful batteries can be a recipe for disaster. With that said, I admire your adventurous spirit and if you have DIY experience in other areas of electronics you can do a Google search for the Nuck's Fistpack tutorial. He takes you step-by-step with photos and text and tells you where you can buy your DIY mod components. I buy my batteries from Lighthound. Always use protected or LifePo safe chemistry batts.

3) That I'm not sure of. Most companies will ship internationally, but will not be held liable if you are charged duties if your items are scrutinized and confiscated by Customs. Many vendors will ship discreetly in hopes of avoiding this. I think Nic Fit Nation is in Canada.

Hi Jenn1181 thx for the replies,

1) I think I will go for the big model and try the ego, if you recommend it :)

2) For the record I am a electrical engineer, I mostly do digital design, modelisation ans software, but I had done some power electronic project in the past (like motor drive ect).
I have looked the Fistpack circuit, https://docs.google.com/Doc?docid=0AXdaMZo4FKMVZGhqdnE4YnNfNDNjN2Q0cHBoZg&hl=en
I love how he packed all the stuff in the Portable Emergency Power gadget from DX that a nice a elegant build. But I not sure I like the circuit. It use a adjustable DC/DC Boost converter but with a power diode at the output, yes it drop the voltage see by the atomizer but diode do dissipate power, ie lets say the circuit draw 1.5 A that 0.9W (1.5x0.6) of power wasted in the diode.

What I have in mind is using 2 3.7 LI-Ion to get 7.4V (or 1 bat with boost) and use an PWM (Pulse-width modulation) driver to regulate the current passing in the atomizer. Basically the driver switches rapidly an MOSFET that open and close the circuit, by varying the duty cycle you can modifies the output power going though the atomiser. By example if I have 7.4V source with a 2.5 ohm atomiser on continuous operation it will draw ~2.96 A for 22.2W power. Now if I use PWM with a 30% ON cycle, the average power will be Pavr = 6.7 W, since P = (V^2)/R the equivalent DC voltage will be sqrt(Pavr * R) = sqrt(6.7 x 2.5) = 4.0926 V rms.

Lot of DC motor drive work in a similar ways, in fact I look for a PWM regulated drive IC to use for a e-cig mod. As long as the battery can supply maximum current I should be able to “simulate” any voltage with very little power lost on the MOSFET and with a regulated RMS current circuit I can get a constant power output no matter if the battery voltage drops.
Now I will look at what IC could do the trick and Li-Ion battery rated for electric car should be able to source the needed current without exploding :)

Thx

That post number 2 lolol

It's junk. Buy a Janty product they have many great ones that will meet your needs. They have a 3 month warranty on batteries and 6 month on atomizers. Pick up a spare atomizer so you have a back up because they will die. I have always been an advocate of Janty as soon as I heard about them because they offer the best product, warranty and customer service. Save yourself a headache and buy from Janty. I learned of them like 4 months into vaping and I wish I would have heard of them earlier. It was buying atomizer after atomizer and knowing if my battery died I would be screwed until I found them. Good luck.
