It's been a week since my last cigarette and haven't had any cravings since going electronic, I'm enjoying vaping alot.I started with the intention to quit all together, but it's quite enjoyable. What are your thoughts on the safety of vaping?when cigarettes first came out everyone thought they were safe then years later they found out how harmful they were.In a few years do you think we'll find out about the dangers of vaping?I really hope not.

Yes, it does seem to be too early to tell for sure. I've been cynical about the medical community for a long time. If you notice, every year or so they come out with another study that says "X" is bad for you and don't eat/drink it. TV shows talk all about it. Then everyone gets on the bandwagon and they make expensive foods and drinks that don't contain "X" and people rush out and buy them.

In a year or so, they debunk the previous study, and now say that "X" is really not bad for you, in fact it can be beneficial.

Caffeine comes to mind. I've been drinking coffee for all my adult life, years and years. One year, it's bad, then it's good again. I think the current wisdom now says that drinking several cups of coffee can reduce your risk of Alzheimers. So go figure.

vaping is much broader than smoking tobacco cigarettes; safety depends on what you vape and what you vape with.
There's poor quality eliquids and high quality eliquids.
Theres good quality hardware and poor quality hardware.

So far the only that I have found that boasts of FDA approved anything is the GP sphereoid, which boasts FDA approved insulators!

Welcome Jgren to ECF. I will always remember the story my mom always told me when I was quite young. There was an elderly gentleman living a few houses from us. He was 98 years old. He went to the doc and was to told to quit smoking because it was not good for his health.

He quit smoking and 1 week later he died. Now was it from smoking or was it from aging to 98 years and his body finally gave up.

I enjoyed my cigarettes but I find vaping to be a better health alternative. I have already decreased my nicotine by 50% and plan within a few months to 0mg of nicotine.

Congrats on being 1 week free of cigarettes....Good Luck to You.

I have friends and family who constantly make me aware of some news article they saw about the "possible" dangers of vaping - but I'll be honest, I have yet to see anything other than scare tactics and when you read them they have absolutely no evidence that they are "bad" for you, just that there is supposedly no strong evidence that says it isn't. It's unfortunate, because the public sees the headlines and they never read the article. The only truly dangerous things I have ever read have been about people who make shoddy mods and start a fire or explosion with them.

Here's how I look at it - we know the dangers of cigarettes, which have 1000's of chemicals that are known to kill people. I know exactly what is in my juice - distilled water, glycerin, sweetener, flavor, nicotine. I can count them on one hand. Water isn't dangerous (if it is, we are all screwed), glycerin is in zillions of products we use every day, and the sweetener and flavors that are in the juice I use are safer/purer than what you find on the grocery shelf. As to the nicotine - people have a horrible understanding of it, because it's so identified with tobacco. There is nothing inherently bad about nicotine, any more than caffeine, in these amounts.

So, I may not have studies to prove it - but personally, I don't need them. Five well-known chemicals, inhaling water vapor - it's certainly a heck of a lot better than analog smoking, and as a life-long asthmatic who feels BETTER and can breathe easier after I vape than before - it's really difficult for me to see what the worry is, except for the folks who won't be making money off of my addiction/health problems due to tobacco use.

I was watching a really interesting documentary the other day - Addicted to Pleasure - Tobacco - BBC Documentary
Addicted to Pleasure - Tobacco - BBC Documentary - YouTube

And it was saying that people knew at least as far back as the 1930s that smoking was connected to cancers and other health problems. So I was wondering why it took so long for the truth to come out and for public policy to change. I think it's because everyone was already hooked at that time and didn't really want to tell the truth about it. Science is objective but politics, not so much.

My theory is that we are now living in a time when most people are NOT hooked. Smoking is vilified and demonized everywhere, and there are vested interests who are losing money because of vaping. What truth do you think they want to tell? I think if vaping could be demonstrated as a hazard, someone would have done it by now. Maybe that will still come. I hope not :)
