New Vaper With A Problem

Hey everyone! My name is Derek, and I just started vaping a few weeks ago. When I first started I got a ....ty E-cig from the tobacco store, probably from china. The battery was a knockoff of an e-go, and the clearomizer was just a basic design, not sure if it was a knockoff or not. I purchased some chinese e-juice from the same tobacco store, and started vaping!

I love vaping a lot, but I began to have a problem. I was getting a major sore throat, to the point where i could barely swallow. I ended up getting sick, so I blamed it on that. Once I was no longer sick, I decided I should buy a mini vivi-nova because my other clearomizer was leaking. I loved it! The only issue was, my sore throat would not go away. I would also wake up in the morning with a mouth so dry my lips would literally stick to my teeth. So it just kept getting worse, and I heard that maybe the fact that I was vaping 100% PG was the problem. I decided to give Mt. Baker Vapor a call, as I heard they were great, and they are a local company. I just got some 80%VG 20%PG 36MG Sticky Bun and it is absolutely amazing! It feels a little bit better at the end of the day, but that may be because I used ibuprofen.

I really do not want to stop vaping, but this just sucks. This problem is really messing with me. Anyone have any advice? By the way, I am drinking about 2 gallons of water a day, so that isn't the problem.

Hi Derek,
After my first month vaping pure PG, I got the sore throat/sore tongue thing going so bad, I had to cut back on vaping for awhile. When I went to 100% VG eliquid, it all got better...but VG alone made my chest feel a bit 'tight'. So, after a few months, I settled on a 50/50 PG/VG blend, and that's what I'm still vaping.

I think there IS a period where bodies have to adapt (for some of us), and for me it took about 3 months before I was completely comfy.

If your mouth is extremely dry, you might want to get some *Biotene mouthwash to help moisturize. (*I think that's the name.)

http://www.biotene.com/dry-mouth-products/mouthwash

I also wonder if the 36mg nic might be contributing to soreness. I couldn't go above 24mg in the beginning, but that level has come waaaay down over the past year. I now vape 6mg regularly, with minor exceptions...like right now I'm vaping 12mg with a bourbon/coke.
:toast:

Hope that sore throat stuff passes soon. Good Luck! :)

Welcome to ECF Derek! There could be a couple reasons for your throat getting sore. The first one I think of is how you are puffing on your ecig. Many of us started out inhaling just like a regular cigarette, and that's too harsh. It's much better to draw in a puff, much like a cigar or pipe, then inhale it. Another possibility is that your setup is running too hot for you, which would also leave you with a pretty irritated tongue. The 36mg nic you are using is very high and also a throat irritant, so perhaps dropping down to 24 or 18mg can help.

One thing that helps heal up is to not inhale for a while - just puff it like a cigar. In reality, most of the nicotine absorption occurs in your mouth tissues, so you'll still stop the cravings. This can give your throat tissues a break to heal up, since they may need a couple days. I'm doing this myself right now after hitting on a too hot vape for a while and irritating the back of my throat.

Good luck and keep on vapin!

Hi. And welcome to ECF. I am a new vaper also so I do not know how much I can help you. I have been vaping for 20 days, no smoking on 24mg nic juices. The only time I had sore throat sensations was when I vaped stuff with cinnamon in it. I don't like it. I am not looking for a big throat hit. I do know that vaping 24mg does keep me awake half the night. I drink lots of water too.

Have you read the newcomers section and the section about cigarette withdrawal. You may get some immediate answers there. Hopefully someone with more experience than I have can post here and give you a more informed answer.

I do not know if the nicotine level would have anything to do with it, or the types of juices. I have read that some are harsher than others.

Good luck. I am sure you will get your answers.

Hi

Well there is the possibility that you just got sick period and it has nothing to do with vaping. Just something to consider.

Of the two, PG is generally considered to be more of an irritant than VG. You made the right move to sort out if this is the problem, as the 20/80 you got from MBV is pretty much the opposite mix of the China stuff you first tried. Time will tell there.

The other thing you have to pay attention to as a new vaper is your technique. Most people can't tolerate "lung vaping" - sucking the vapor down and deep like you did with cigarettes. Especially when you are new to this. That's not where you get nicotine into your system from vaping anyway. Approach vaping more like smoking a cigar - suck the vapor into your mouth, to the back of the throat, and no more. Don't do "tight" pulls on it like a cigarette and take it deep into your lungs.

yeah Rickajho, I just learned about that technique today, so I have been doing that for the last few hours. I am sure I won't see any real improvement until my throat heals up, but it feels a little bit better already! I also today just got a smok brand pyrex vivi-nova 3.5 ml from Baker. I get free shipping from them for being a local, so I tend to just buy whatever i need from their site. Have any of you tried the smok vivi-nova?

Hello from across the Sound. I had a similar issue when I started about a month ago, though not quite as bad. My throat was very scratchy for the first couple off weeks. Like the other said drawing the vapor into your mouth first then inhaling helped a lot as did the suggestion to have some a drink handy while you vape. My throat still gets a little irritated when I chain vape a lot like I tend to do when I'm at home on the computer, but just having some soda or water seems to resolve it.

YES! 'Sleepless in Atlanta' was the trade-off for several months, until I could lower the nic. 18mg was better, but still kept me awake. Once I got down to 12 mg, I could sleep all night. Interesting thing I noticed was vivid dreams with higher nic. Now that I'm vaping 6mg most of the time, I don't remember my dreams at all. :(

i LIKE dreaming...sometimes. :)

Hi again

You didn't mention I believe how much you smoke - that can clue us in some about how to find the right nic level. Only the most seriously addicted, multi packs a day smokers typically need something as high as 36 mg. And as already pointed out, the higher you go on your nic level the more of an irritant that introduces too. You may want to consider cutting that right in half and picking up an 18 mg and a 24 mg as well to sort out where you need to land for your working nic level.

MBV is good people to be working with.

I've seen a few here or there, Only really been posting for about a day or so, though, haha. A couple of m coworkers have some basic Smoks and I've tried them a handful of times when we're showing off our juices. It's a nice unit, nothing fancy. Seems like it would be a decent unit to start out with, though I would probably recommend an eGo twist. My friend has one and I've used it a lot, very nice.

I'm new to vaping but did a lengthy consult with someone at a b&m about my smoking habits etc etc. I had been smoking 2-3 PAD and have smoked 29 years. He suggested splitting between 24 mg and 11 mg. I'm not off analogs yet (finishing day 4) and am doing 60% 24 mg and rest 11. I can't imagine doing more than than of 24 mg. I am prone to throat issues since I do a lot of speaking and know when I need to shift from the 24 to 11.

Well that may be an issue, I really only smoked about 3-5 analogs a day, unless i was drinking, in which case probably 7 or more. I am a singer though, and really did not want to smoke anything at all, so I thought vaping would be a great way to stop. I started on 18 MG though, and have only been vaping 36 MG today. I am not sure if that was my problem, but it could add more problems in the future, so thank you for giving me a heads up. MBV sent me a free sample of a 18 MG, so I may just stick with that for a while to see if that fixes it.

With the stated amount of cigarettes before vaping, I'd say 12mg should fit the bill perfect - if not 6..
You can try getting 12 and 6mg versions of same juice and blending them to get pretty much any level in between should either be too much/too little.
That's how I found that I only need 15-16 for the rare occasion when 12 isn't enough - wanted to stay off clean 18mg juices. turned out it works!
