What's goin on guys,

I'm About 3 weeks into vaping now. I've quickly realised just how massive this vaping community is and how much there is to learn, it's pretty freakin cool...

I decided to start vaping recently for a few reasons. I joined the Marine Corps April 27th of '15 and graduated boot July the 24th. It just so happens I managed to fracture my femur in boot, which ended up requiring surgery, and am now sitting in a medical platoon at Camp Geiger in NC, and will be sitting so for the next 5 months or so.. I've been a dipper for the past 4 or so years. Now that I'm sitting around ALL day EVERY day I find myself dipping constantly. I quickly noticed how much I depended on it, and I'm not content with the addiction or problems that will come later in life from dipping; so, I did some homework and decided to try vaping, as it has helped my brother quit dipping, and I enjoy the flavors, effects, and healthiness of vaping.

Anyway, I decided to start out with a subox mini. It's been a decent starter for me, but I quickly found the issues with the sub ohm coils for the tank, and it has been quite irritating...

I have been using authentic efest 30-80 amp batts and usually high quality max vg juice at moderate wattage, low 30's, and the coils still seem to be burning dry and burning up by the end of the day... even after properly priming, sitting, and also poking holes in the wick with a fine needle. I also do prime hits farely often.

The rba is nice, but I can't say I'm happy with these coils.. including the 1.2 ohm at lower wattage. So I did some more homework and ended up ordering a whole batch of goodies to try out.

There should be an Atlantis Aspire v2, Mutation X v4 rda, a couple different rolls of kanthal, some japanese organic cotton, an LTQ Vapor build kit, and an IPV D2 super mini for use with coil building adventure, waiting for me... Also have a sample pack from five pawns on the way to try out.

Can't wait to start exploring this hobby (means of quitting tobacco).

Cheers guys :thumb:

@TOPFLiTE94 first off welcome and I wish you a speedy recovery! The mutation X v4 is pretty nice and for a first rda I think you'll like it. Trust me when I say this once you start getting into dripping though you won't want to go back to tanks haha. You seem to have a pretty good set up heading your way and if you need any help you know where to ask.

Hello! and welcome to the forums!

There is indeed a lot involved with the hobby aspect of vaping. As an example, the Kangertech coils you have could be rebuilt. Whatever issues you have, it is probably fixable. :)

Welcome @TOPFLiTE94 and thank you for your service. Hope you heal quickly!

Sounds like you have some fun toys en route. Wicking is IMO the most difficult thing to get right. Cotton needs to be "loose", as it expands when wet. What diameter are you building your coils? I found on RBAs that I need at least 3/32" diameters to minimize dry hits. I have a couple of jigs and drill bits in my build kit. On RDAs, I'm sometimes building upwards of 3mm. I'm liking around 2.5mm most days.

Take a gander @Mooch blogs discussing batteries. He does some testing and catalogs his findings in his blogs. Efest batteries are o.k., and I have some which I use regularly. But do take note, they are not always as advertised. You just want to watch how hard you run them. If an Efest claims to be a 20A battery, I consider it a 10A and then build to no more than 50-70% of that. Just paranoid that way :)

I appreciate the well wishes guys! :thumb: @NealBJr good to know, I would think it would be quite a job rebuilding these clearo coils though! I'll look into this.

The Atlatas v2 is an AMAZING tank and these .5 ohm coils are great. Amazing flavor and good vapor paired with the subox. I also tried out my first build on the mutation x v4 on the ipv d2; it turned out (single coil build) at 3mm/10 wraps/28 guage twisted kanthal/1.72 ohms burning red inside-out. :thumb: Flavor is decent as well as vapor for a one-off first experiment. Certainly not the sub ohm high wattage builds I plan on having fun with, but it was fun.

@DingerCPA wicking seems to be fairly easy for me, I havent had a self wicked coil burn dry yet on the rba. I'm careful when it comes to keeping the wick fluffy, and I've found I'm an over-dripper with the rda.. These kanger clearos just seem too tightly packed, and fluffing them with a needle doesn't seem to help; even at the point of flooding they burn up at low watts. :( Maybe just severe bad luck? As for the efest batts, I was unaware they were considered over-rated, I'll certainly look more into batts and find the safe options for my type of vaping (loooooong lung hits).

Cheers guys!

Welcome to ECF!

I find the OCC coils have way way too much cotton in them for high vg juice, anything over 60% they burn out pretty quick, I still buy the original horizontal coils when I need to but I change out the cotton in them (re-wick), I get way better flavor, more vapor and I can go beyond the suggested wattage's without any dry hits.

There's plenty of vids out there on how to do it if you're interested :)

Good info, I'll definitely look into this. I realized the max vg juice was having a hard time wicking. I wish I could use a greater pg blend, but even 20% pg makes my throat and lungs tighten up like I'm having an asthma attack or something... :nah:
