Afaik, that's the recommended battery. Not being versed in the ways of variable voltage (I come to the VV Woodvil pure as the driven snow) I assume that the electronics govern the overhead.

Correct. Regulated VV devices alow a min/max voltage in and then output a regulated voltage.

Mike, will any 16340's work or only a specific "type". In other words will 16340 aw imr's and aw protected 16340's work?

Rob will decide on the batteries , any 2x 3.7 volt ones will work the size is dictated by the package and what he has space for.
