Forgive me, but I have severe issues with this petition, namely that the vaping industry fought long and hard to get e-cigarettes classified as tobacco products instead of medical devices, and the other issue I have is you have offered no alternative classification.

Lets say this petition gets across the President's desk. What are you going to do if he looks at it and goes, "this person is right, these are not tobacco products...they have helped millions quit smoking...this should be regulated by the medical industry."

Do I need to go on? I don't want to get an Rx for e-juice.

I was going to say something very similar after reading post #1. The vaping industry avoided near devastation in order to not be classified as a medical device and be classified as a tobacco product. Also, technically, if you are using nicotine in your e-liquid, it is derived from actual tobacco. Nicotine exists in other plants, such as the tomato, but in quantities too small to extract anything usable out of. Synthetically manufactured nicotine is possible, but your e-liquid would cost over $100 per ml.

The struggle is getting the FDA and local municipalities to recognize it as a "less harmful" and "smokeless" product. To not treat it as being dangerous like combustable tobacco products.

I don't want to come across as a pessimist, and I feel the intentions of the petition are well meant, but alas it is a rather mis-directed effort...

A good place to get active and involved is to visit CASAA.org and also keep a look out for the Daily Action Plan threads here in the General Forum.

Exactly. I've signed, but I'm cynical, since they still haven't responded to the last whitehouse.gov petition. And the answer to the first was poorly researched negative fluff.

What i'd really like to see is a petition that asks specifically that e-cigs be considered to be and regulated as recreational products. ie. minimal harm, minimal regulation.

Focusing on the nicotine and comparing to NRTs opens the medicinal regulation can of worms. The current ruling is that as long as there are no medicinal claims e-cigs can't be regulated as medical products. Even though it's causing problems now, at the time that ruling came down, regulation as tobacco was the better option and we wrote letters and fought hard for it.
