Atomizer overheating?? If you mean the cap, base of the atty gets warm to the touch, dealing with a heating element(s) (the coil(s)), metal gets hot. If it is a tank and the whole tank is getting hot, chain vaping to much, raise your nic level or slow down. If it is getting scalding hot to the touch and transferring down into the mod to where you can't touch it after a few vapes, you are running it to hot/high in power, there is a short or other issue, this breaks down into checking coils/atomizers for shorts, loose wires, and a number of other problems. If on a mech, recoil your atty and build a higher ohm coil with more wraps or thicker wire to ramp down potential max wattage at the coils.

OP, I think you're getting ahead of yourself with the worries. Or this could be another troll thread. However, most regulated mods have a built in timer usually 10-12 seconds. If you hold on to your fire button longer than its predetermined timer then your mod will stop firing.

AFAIK 2 types of shorts. Atomizer short and battery short. Atomizer short happens when you're 510 isn't making connection with your atomizer. Battery short happens when you install your batteries the wrong way (most regulated mods have battery short protection, it just won't turn on).

Just buy a regulated mod (if you haven't) and start vaping. Stay away from mechs.

If its just getting hot and not a short then its cause could be that your vaping juice that has formed a cocoon around the coil (mostly burnt sweeteners) thus your heating up the cocoon in order to try to vaporize the juice and that requires the coil to get hotter than its suppose to, heating up the surrounding metal. Having your atty get hot is telling you its time to change/rebuild the coil. I had my protank base heat up quickly since there is very little room in the atty head.
You should share what atty your using and the hitter also so maybe you'll get a more specific answer than just assumptions.

what kind of atomizer gets hot? my melo 2 gets warm after 3 or 4 vaps, aromimizer gets hot if chain vape 10+, subtank gets hot rarely. it depends on your coil. horizontals coils making atomizer warm as heat jumps from coil to atomizer walls. vertical coils not getting hot even with chain vaping , only drip tip becomes heat. but if it is so hot that you can burn an egg on it then there is definitely smth wrong with atomizer or even mod. for kanthal A1 and Stainless Steal it is not common to be too hot, but my nickel 200 and titan in temp mode are very warm with melo 2. i guess nicotine doesnt affect the temperature of your atomizer it makes only flash , after chain vaping maybe headache or lung discomfort.

Keeping it simple, the coil is probably burning your juice. Could adjust your watts lower.
Tip:
When starting your vape low, I find that the wattage that works for me is usually 1 to 2 watts over the lowest watt setting (where i can barely see the vape cloud on the exhale). Lower watt settings lessen the chance of burning the liquid and generates the best flavor IMO. This formula applies to non sub ohm'g YMMV (1.0 ohm is iffy non sub ohm'g--2.0 ohm's here).
After I get my Atty (coil and chamber heat up) going for awhile, I will often times turn the mod down a watt or so to see if I can taste more flavor. I'm often surprised at how much better the vape is by lowering the vape temp/wattage.
