Hi Renee, and welcome to ECF!

What you are experiencing is not that unusual for many new vapors. It took you a while for your body to get used to cigarette smoke; it will take it a while to get used to vapor, too. You should see some improvement over the next 2-3 weeks.

You may not know that it's not necessary to inhale your vapor into the lungs to get it's nicotine. The molecules of vapor are a different size than that of tobacco smoke, and is absorbed in the mucous membranes of the mouth, throat, and nose. So you need not inhale vapor into your lungs to get the benefit of vapor, only if you wish to for the full vaping experience.

When you take a draw from your e-cig, imagine you are sucking on a straw in a milkshake. Use a slow, consistant, gentle draw of 3-6 seconds and hold it in your mouth. Either inhale it into your lungs, or exhale it from your mouth and nose.

Your tastebuds have been damaged from years of smoking, so your sense of taste will be off for a while until they heal. Allow your sense of smell assist your tongue in "tasting" the flavor in your vapor. Exhaling some of the vapor through your nose will assist you in enjoying your flavored e-liquids.

The two main ingredients in e-liquids are PG and VG. Both are humectants, meaning that they draw water from the environment around them. They pull significant amounts of water from our body and the vapor leaves our body as water vapor. Therefore, drink plenty of water to replace this loss, prevent dry mouth from vaping, and help detox the many chemicals in your body left behind from smoking.

Also, a lot of people think that getting the highest nicotine level available is going to give them the cigarette experience, but many a time, that is not the case. Propylene Glycol does a wonderful job of delivering nicotine and a lower strength like 12mg might be easier on your throat.

I'm working on this 1 myself. In part I think it may be due to still smoking analogs, which I do , but I've cut down a lot. I get up in the morning an the 1st hit from an e-cig just about kills me...lol. Then I do it right. Have to stop and think about it, especially with new flavors, some are stronger than others. We'll get there..this too shall pass.

I could have written this post....as a matter of fact, I did write one just like it!! I was in the same boat, coughing with each draw on the e-cig. It got so bad that I walked away from the whole idea of it for a while. Then I wrote a post like yours, got tons of great advice and finally figured things out. What worked for me:

1) I buy my e-juice at 50 pg/ 50 vg. I tried 70pg/30vg, 60pg/40pg but the 50/50 was the sweet spot for me.
2) As much as I wanted to try all the sweet juices, I realized they made it worse - maybe at some point I'll try again, but for me in the beginning, they were too, too sweet and irritated my throat - hence, more coughing.
3) Using 50 pg has a little less TH but I realized I love peppermint flavored juices (Peppermint Twist from HHV's being my favorite) - the peppermint helps with the throat hit - it's just perfect for me.
4) I read all the great advice I got, and even watched some video's on You tube and now I take a few small draw's into my mouth, then inhale.
5) Drink lots of water - I am not a water drinker but vaping is dehydrating and the more dehydrated I'd get, the worse the cough would get. So, an added health bonus - I am now a water drinker and it's helped!

After getting all of this down, figuring out the juice and levels that work best for me, I decided on Sunday morning to give the e-cig another serious go - and have not smoked a cig since Sunday morning at 11!! :) Love vaping, do not miss smoking one bit.

Just don't give up - it takes some experimenting and trial and error but it will work and you will stop coughing!

Hi Renee,

I had the same experience when I started. Try to carry a bottle of water with you. I found that drinking lots of water for the first week helped a lot with this. Gum as well.

I'm still a Newb myself.
Best of luck.

My coughing was horrible the first couple of weeks. Ironically, I got the flu the same day I started vaping. A few things I did were to keep the vapor in my mouth longer (10 seconds or so) and not always inhaling, and taking shorter drags. Now I've upped my VG% to 35, I find that much smoother. Some flavors will make me cough no matter what, so I limit my drags on those big time. Normally I'll take a 7 second drag or so, but with the stronger ones I'll cut that in half. It's still hard to believe how much nicotine is absorbed just by holding the vape in my mouth and not inhaling :)

hi, another newbie here.
ive been using e-cigs for a little over a year now. it has been my experience that drinking a lot of water. and lowering the nicotine levels will reduce the cough. i started with a 24mg, that would stink my throat. i didnt cough every drag at 18mg, the 11mg or 12mg seems to be just right, especially in combination with this variable voltage battery i have now. i can go with 3.2v for good flavor or jack it up a little until it stings a little

Thank you all soo much :) Im so glad Im not alone!! I guess over time I will figure out all the stuff ya'll are talking about. I plan on going back up to Richardson on Friday to pick up some milder juice. I have read all your posts and will keep reading course gotta make time for my facebook addiction too. I plan on giving up reg cigs totally as soon as Im done with what I have left can't be wasteful. lol
I have to figure out how to use this forum too *whew* so much to do so little time.

Thanks again for all your replies!!

I, too, was in this same boat! It takes a while to get used to the act of vaping, and figure out a technique that works best for you. I like to pull on it like I'm gently sucking on a straw until I get a "mouthful" of flavor, hold it there, swirl it around, inhale a bit & just take my time savoring each puff. Remember, this ISN'T a cig! It's a whole new experience, so make the most out of it & enjoy it thoroughly all the way. :D

Also, I found out that I cannot stand PG, because it instantly makes me cough/gag and I dislike (rather intensely) a strong throat hit (TH). When I switched to VG, that went away almost instantly. Try some new juice (I just love Velvet Cloud Vapors) and different VG/PG blends & nic strengths until you get a 'winning' combination. Higher nic % seems a bit harsher IMO than the 12-18% stuff.

Good luck! You can do this! :D

I'm new too, got my kit this past Monday. Ran into the same problem. Definitely read the library article other folks have already mentioned. The http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/ecf-library/337017-inhalation-technique-e-cigarette.html one. The bit that helped me most is right here:

"2. First the vapor is drawn into the mouth, then held there for a second or two. Then, it can be inhaled if desired. The vapor is then expelled through the mouth or nose."

That "hold" in the mouth? Made all the difference for me. I only cough now if I slip up and try to do the old regular cig inhale. But that's becoming rare. Especially because slowing it down, doing a slower draw, holding in the mouth, the flavors are more interesting. And I'm trying out different ones and thinking of running up to a shop some folks on the forum told me about and try out some more flavors. Because I'm finding I'm enjoying vaping way more than my old smoking.

I mean, I liked smoking. Always did. Which is one of the reasons my (oh so many) attempts to quit were massive fails. But I was also doing an awful lot of my smoking as sheer habit I was barely aware of and not really... experiencing it? I guess?

Anyway. Try the "technique" in the article. Experiment a bit. I'm finding I like a leisurely draw so I can taste the flavoring, hold a bit, then exhale through the nose. Get tastes and scents and it's interesting. And for me, something about that brief "hold" in the mouth makes a big difference. I know to do the exhale through the nose, I'm inhaling at least some in the lungs but it doesn't make me cough.

I still haven't given up reg smokes YET! Im down from 1 pack a day to less then 3 a day...

Sounds like me. I was a pack and a half to two pack a day smoker. Pretty heavy. Dropped almost immediately to maybe six a day. Then three. Then ran out I think this morning? And don't seem to care there aren't any cigarettes in the house. Which is a little eerie. I was so hooked, I could have panic attacks over running out. To just... not care? That was unexpected...

I am not as heavy, but everything else you have described is totally like me. I just recently started, but has cut back significantly on the analogs. The key is finding the juice you really enjoy vaping. There are so many great choices out there. I would say the selection is more diverse than in the world of analogs. I have also experienced coughing and thought I was doing something wrong, but what you and others have described works for me. Thanks!
