I'm a pack a day smoker.... I need to figure out what is the correct nicotine level for me so i don't overdose.

Unless you're chugging e-liquid or straight nicotine base, it's pretty hard to "overdose". Worst case is you take a few puffs, get a little overly buzzed and say "woah, gotta chill for a minute."

Additionally, my nicotine level recommendation varies greatly on the device it's being used with. Drippers/lower-ohm devices, I'd say start with 6mg. With a carto tank or a higher ohm tank, 12-18mg. Best thing you can do is experiment. Worst case scenario (if you buy some juice at too high of a nic level) you can dilute it by halving it with the same juice in 0 nicotine.

Also, to add, I was a 2 PAD smoker and I started off with a junky plastic CE4 tank at 12mg nic. When I switched to more reliable ProTanks and stuff this dropped to 6mg, which is where I stayed when I switched to RDA's. I still mostly vape 3-6mg nic, but I do have a lot of 0 nic that I vape when I'm just looking to chuck clouds.

Welcome to ECF. You may want to start at 18 mg and you can always move up or down from there. Here is some excellent info on the inhalation of nicotine vaping versus cigarettes. As you will see, we do not inhale as much through vapor as we do from cigs. Do not be afraid to use higher nicotine levels if needed.

Good luck!

For e-liquid, the typical nicotine recommendations are as follows:

1/2 pack per day or less = 6 mg nicotine
1 ppd = 12 mg
1 1/2 ppd = 18 mg
2 ppd = 24 mg

Figure on consuming at least 2 - 3 ml of liquid daily. Bottles are usually 10 or 30 ml volume.

PG and VG are often used together in different ratios in e-liquid. For example, a 50/50 PG/VG ratio. Many juice vendors offer a range of different ratios as far as PG/VG.
E-liquid generally has concentrated nicotine, propylene glycol (Pg), vegetable glycerin (Vg) and flavoring extracts.
The ratio of Pg to Vg is known as the pg/vg ratio, and a 50/50 blend is common.

PG = Propylene Glycol - the "flavor carrier" of e-liquid. A secondary source of "throat hit", but not as strong as the nicotine concentration. Some people have a sensitivity or even an allergy to PG. It's very thin in consistancy.

VG = Vegetable Glycerin - the "vapor maker" of e-liquid. Used as a sweeter in many food sources, and also as a skin emollient. It's very thick in consistancy.

This was kind of done in stages for me. I was a 3 pad 40+ year chain smoker. I started on a cig-sized battery with cartomizers and 24mg liquid. Tat helped me quit smoking in 3 days.

2-3 months later, I was beginning to have some woozy periods, and anxiety, and sleeplessness. I cut back to 18mg while still using my original set-up. I would also mention that I needed to cut back my caffeine and sugar intake for a while.

As I went thru the next 3 years and my equipment got better, I let my body tell me what to do. Too many cravings and I upped my nicotine. Too woozy and I cut back. Today I use 5mg on a kayfun style set-up. If I use a dripper, that 5mg can sometimes seem too high.

I would also add that that first 6 months or so can be tricky for a former heavy smoker. Sometimes it is difficult to tell what is a nicotine problem and what is a withdrawal problem. Quitting isn't for sissies.

depends on the wattage you vape at.

to get in the right ballpark, use
watts x milligram strength = 100

so you can vape
10mg at 10 watts
20mg at 5 watts
5mg at 20 watts

the other ballpark figure to keep an eye on is total nicotine intake in milligrams (mg)
again nice easy number to remember: 100mg.
5ml of 20mg/ml
4ml of 25mg/ml
10ml of 10mg/ml

Yup, all the suggestions are spot on from what I experienced. I smoked just under a pack a day. Had the last cigarette January of 2014, the morning after I started vaping I had one last cigarette, broke the last 7 up and threw them away in a ritual. I smoked full flavor smokes and 12-18 mg....usually the 18 ended up being perfect for me. I recently (a couple of months ago or so), went to a sub tank. Now I vape 6 mg. and this is satisfying. Good luck and welcome aboard....

p.s. I found that I like vaping even better then smoking cigarettes! Keep on keepin on....I smoked for about 34 years! :thumb:
