I've been posting about my positive experience with vaping and encouraging the smokers there to give it a try. One person was going to go for it when a friend told her about a neighbor that got an e cigarette and a few days later was admitted to the hospital with nicotine poisoning. This caused her to change her mind about trying the "e" approach. I'm vaping more than I smoked right now and I have had NO negative effects. I'd still like for her to try it but I don't really know what to say about how that happened to the other lady. Honestly, how could one end up in the hospital like that? Wouldn't you begin to feel some negative effects before it reached the point of poisoning? Any advise for me to give her? Thanks!

This is possible, people can go overbaord but its really easy to know when youve had too much nic - it starts with a headache or tummy upset. If you go past that stage and keep vaping, well..I'm not saying its impossible that this CAN happen but unlikely or uncommon.
How many smokers do you know who have done this? Even very heavy smokers? Or maybe your friend has 'a neighbour who went to hospital after smoking'. Could just be one of 'those stories' people tell when they don't want you to do something.
I know someone who had a cousin who died after reading about e cigs..yeah well you get my point :)

It's very possible. The person may have been using liquid that contained much more Nicotine than their body was used to. Before you start vaping, make sure you understand how much nicotine you're taking in. Liquids and cartridges come in many different strengths. Some are VERY, VERY strong. Figure out how much nicotine you were taking in with analogs and then you can figure out what strength is right for you.

In the case of adult smokers, it would take at least 60 milligrams of nicotine to make one ill. This is the equivalent to 3 packs of cigarettes or half a cigar.

I'm quite a noobie when it comes to electronic cigarettes, but what I can recommend is a lower dosage of nicotine cartridges/fluid. This will ensure that you're getting the desired amount, just as Digs recommended. If it's not giving you the buzz that you prefer then you can step up to a higher dose.

Early signs of nicotine poisoning are:
  • Headache
  • Abdominal Cramps
  • Vomiting
  • Weakness
If you feel any of these symptoms, stop immediately and contact a physician. I know you can read this on any medical site out there, but the fact of the matter is it's true. If you recognize the symptoms early on than you're able to move to a lower dosage of nicotine where you'll be able to actually enjoy e-cigs, just as a majority of the users on this forum are able to.

If you can convey the point to your friends that electronic cigarettes are perfectly safe with a moderate dosage of nicotine than you'll hopefully be able to persuade them to invest in a healthier habit.

Some skepticism is not a bad thing. I know i was skeptical when a friend told me about vaping. He gave me the ECF link, and told me to research it. If people are willing to listen, I"ll tell them more than they want to know, but i still give them the link and tell them to check it out themselves. IMO trying to convince people doesn't work nearly so well as letting them make their own choices.

I totally agree with everyone....I was a 1 & 1/2 pack a day person, more if drinking...So, after reading a lot of posts on this forum,,,,I decided my best starting point was the
10 -16 mg of nic range...Works great for me....Also, if you know you are going to be vaping a lot at one time, like at the computer,,,,one Senior member suggested that you use a lower nic level at that time....So, when I am at the computer...which is a lot,,,I now use 6 mg nic....No ill effects, except have to still drink plenty of water....
Enjoy....and as with everything else,,,,read and learn....

Thanks for the comments everyone. I copied and pasted this link for her to read and go from there. To be honest, I think I've come closer to nic poisoning by smoking than vaping. I have honestly smoked so much sitting at my computer at times that I got bad headaches with nausea and felt weak and shaky. Vaping has given me a whole new burst of energy and I feel great even when vaping heavily.

I had a touch of nic OD when I first started vaping. Playing with the new toy all day and trying all the cool flavors, I vaped a lot more than I would have smoked in a day. If you translate inhales of vapor to hits on an analog - it would equate to three or more packs per day. It wasn't fun. Imodium is a wonderful drug- 'nuff said.

I still use my e-cig like a pacifier and vape constantly, but I have gone with a much lower nic level to keep the total quantily of nic for a day down.

I have experienced the same while driving. I would completely chain smoke the analogs and would get the shakes and feel sick. I feel way better since I went to 100% vape. My hummer smells like leather again. I would agree that the best advice is know what strength your friend is smoking now and match it up close to what you get for e juice. I was a 35 cigs a day smoker. I now vape 18-24 mg (mainly 24) quit just like that and try to be careful not to mistake my e juice for eye drops and everything is fine.

errr, ummm, did the friend say that the neighbor was admitted for nicotine poisoning?

or did the friend say that the neighbor said they were admitted for nicotine poisoning?

or did the neighbor go to the ER because they thought they had nicotine poisoning?

Was the neighbor actually admitted to the hospital? That would mean that the ER made a medical decision that there was some reason to admit the person to the hospital. Anybody can go to the ER for any reason whatsoever and get looked at by a doctor. If the doctor determines that there is actually something wrong that warrants it, they admit you to the hospital. Most people just get looked at and maybe treated and sent home.

If the neighbor was admitted to the hospital was it for nicotine poisoning? or something else.

Getting nauseous or a serious headache or the runs doesn't necessarily mean that you've been "poisoned". For example I'm not sure that getting drunk, throwing up, getting a headache, and maybe even passing out qualifies as alchohol poisoning or alchohol poisoning that would get you actually admitted to the hospital? I think it takes some particular blood alchohol level? but there's nothing preventing you from going to the ER and having a doctor treat you.
