ok, so, i love my EVO and my Pilot Hybrid...but both have failed me in a bar with a live band.

both started out decently...but it seems...the automatic switch in the 401 batteries are REALLY sensitive, just as described and explained.

i can't say 100% but it seemed my EVO was slightly more sensitive than the Pilot batteries.

i went to a bar to see my friend's band play, and bass licks from the guitar were setting it off pretty regularly. so that's bad.

now, one thing i did notice, that when the battery was getting set off...it would tend to set off more once it got started. like, i was testing it, and if i blew on it to light it up, it would tend to stay lit and stay activating once i started it.

also it started in my pocket...i pulled it out and the atomizer was WAY hot, couldn't even touch it. i had to use my shirt to unscrew it.

so...yes...the rumors do seem to be true, low end noise like bass is really dangerous for the m401/402 batteries.

thankfully my Pilot atomizer didn't burn up...so kudos on that...it's going strong after heating up past a comfortable level.

so...my two field tests so far...they performed ok in a regular noisy bar...but failed the test in a bar with a live band.

that does NOT mean that they are bad products...just that they aren't going to do me very well when i'm in situations like that. it also answers the question of...needing to get an alternative such as a 901 for those types of events.

so, take it with a grain of salt...i mean, decibel levels will differ in different places and for different people, but my friends have a pretty good setup for their band and this was pretty low and clear bass riffs, so be mindful that it will be easy to set off a battery with an automatic switch like the 401.

now who wants to sell me a 901?? :)

haha, yes...i'm definitely a party hound ;) heck, i can YELL at my 401 and make it light up. that's a bad thing too...since being in loud bars, we always have to yell to have conversation. now if i could just find someone with great prices and stock on 901s....

or maybe a nice giant pen style.

man. maybe i should just hold out and go for a SD or pipe!

otherwise....just to make sure no one misinterprets...i do love my 401...my EVO and Pilot, thank you John and Steve, but as a warning to all those frequenting loud places or partying way too much, the sensitivity in the batteries may not work out for you.

I would add that I think this could be an issue with any of the e-cigs with the electronic switches. The ones I've got with an electronic switch are:

DSE901 (from Heaven Gifts)
DSE801 (from Heaven Gifts)
Joyetech 510/Dura
Evo/M401

The ones I've got which certainly don't have this type of switch are:

RN4075 mini (often sold as a DSE901...)
RN4072 pen
RN4081 supermini
Ruyan Bling

And to clarify when I said the 901 worked fine at a punk gig, I actually meant the RN4075!!

fitz, totally on you with this, im a DJ and the 401 simply cannot hang! it cant even hang while im drivin in the car with the windows down...this IMO is a big flaw in the 401. And now im totally in love with my 901....and too be honest, from my personal experience, the 901 is better than the 401! could be a faulty unit and i bought an extra atomizer to test it out but ive decided to totally quit the 401 and stick with the 901. My SD should be coming home this week, and i think this device will be what I've been looking for :)

Many people don't like the price of the SD but in the end i think its worth it ;)

I've noticed that the LEDs on both my Dura and Pilot batteries will flicker on when they're shaken and it makes sense that music can trigger the sensors too. My solution is to always unscrew the atomiser/cart from the battery when I'm not actively vaping. The current draw from lighting the LED (which is all that can happen when the battery is disconnected) is going to be tiny compared to heating up the atomiser and this seems borne out by the run time I get. An added bonus is that there's less chance of the liquid getting into the battery and clogging things up.

Wow. You guys can really make a newbie worry. I have a Pilot 401. I also ordered a Classic penstyle, hasn't arrived yet, but is there a problem with this one too?

idaho you shouldnt worry about that sensitive switch problem, its nothing major. its just annoying sometimes, especially for me when it goes into cooldown mode and i wanna vape.

I wouldn't worry, just be aware of how to look after the kit and you'll be fine. Speaking as someone who was in your position a couple of weeks ago my top two recommendations are to get a carry case which keeps things from rattling around and unscrew the battery from the atomiser when you're not using it.

You should note that "average" noise levels won't cause a problem. The music in a pub or something doesn't cause an issue in my experience. Anything with serious sound pressure levels might though. Loud gigs, driving around in a car full of subwoofers, that type of thing.. The classic from PS (an RN4072) shouldn't be affected by this as they have a different type of switch in them.

idaho, no worries about the product.

it will exceed your expectations as an ecig, i LOVE my EVO and my Pilot...mainly equally...but i do think i like my EVO a tad more (sorry Steve!) but we're talking like...5% more love. both feel great, but something about the EVO just feels slightly smoother.

and...it's probably that the switch is more sensitive...therefore easier/smoother to puff.

the issue being discussed here is REALLY LOUD music or noise, mainly low levels like heavy bass guitar or deep bass in music like being at a live concert. i've played games loudly with both units at my desk, and blared music from my pc with both ecigs and neither will set off.

i can however, yell at my cig, and the vibrations from your voice will set it off...like, if you hold it directly in front of your mouth and yell.

using it in a pub or loud bar will be fine, mine was fine...it only started suffering because of the thick bass guitar and reverb.

if you don't frequent places with these noise issues, you won't have a problem like the one we're discussing :)

I use my EVO in a pub all the time with no problem. It's only when I have been near loud music that i had issues. My regular pub has jazz bands and they don't seem to muster up the atomizer destroying levels. Idaho, you'll end up with a bunch of these things over time and if you are going to a loud place, you'll bring your 901 or whatever. I am looking forward to getting my Lady Pipe, hope it doesn't do this.
