"No you don't...not THAT!" is what my roomie told me yesterday, after he came into the kitchen where I was cooking.
"What are you talking about?" I asked.
He said, "You cannot vape anything that smells like that terrible cigar odor in here."
I replied, "I'm not vaping a thing (at the moment), and if I was, it's unflavored VG; no odor."
"What's that I'm smelling then?" he asked.

"I'm baking a SMOKED HAM, as you requested last week!"

"Oh..." he said, walking away... "Smells GREAT! Carry on!"

PERCEPTION is EVERYTHING!

Funny responses! Y'all got me laughin' on this end!

Really, roomie (former smoker) wasn't acting offended as much as feeling sorta sick from the smell, but once he realized the smell was smoked ham, everything changed! Just had to get his 'smeller' plugged in the right way.
(I agree that it WAS a pungent smelling ham! ;))

I'm having a similar problem today: I'm working through a bottle of chocolate banana juice that I believe has been mislabeled...the smell and taste kinda reminds me of 'outhouse'. Probably should save it for a special occasion, eh?

If perception is everything, is reality subjective?

Interesting philosophical question.

To me and a small proportion of the population, an artificial sweetener (saccharin) tastes impossibly bitter, so much so that it renders inedible or undrinkable anything in which it's been mixed. It does not taste sweet at all, as it does to most people.

So, which is it: sweet or bitter?

BTW, the sorry history of saccharin and the USDA and FDA attempts to regulate and/or ban it over more than a century makes for mighty depressing reading. Canadians, you're probably unfamiliar with saccharine: it remains banned in your country.

Perceptions of the smell of cigarette smoke -- a much more complex stimulus -- have changed over time. If you go back half a century or so, you'll find that surveys asking if cigarette smoke smelled "good" or "bad" showed that most people thought it smelled good. The proportions are completely reversed now, with a huge majority of people, including a large percentage of people posting here on ECF, strongly opine that cigarette smoke "stinks." Fifty years ago, Big Tobacco using the skills of Madison Avenue, ruled people's impressions. Today, the ANTZ and the nannies rule.

If there is any sort of objective "truth" to the perception of cigarette smoke, I suspect it's somewhere in the middle. Without the brainwashing from either side, a small percentage of the population probably would perceive the smell of burning cigarettes as "good," a small percentage would perceive it as "bad," and the vast majority (60%? 70%? more?) would identify iit, figure it as a "null" and thereafter go on to ignore it.

Think I have the same bottle of juice. Not sure how "Sweetened Urinal Cake" translates to "chocolate banana" for some people but apparently it does. Not a "bad" flavor over all and it took me a while to place where I had smelled it. Then it dawned on me while using a public restroom that the odor wafting from the blue urinal cake was nearly identical to what I had in my PV. Had to throw away the carto and change to something completely different. ;)
