I've been a smoker for nearly 12 years... I have a few friends into vaping so I probably did what a lot of newcomers do, I picked up a disposable e-cig at the convenient store. I purchased a Blu classic tobacco 24mg nicotine disposable e-cig. I bought a couple in a few days and was able to drastically cut down on analogs. I really liked the flavor, the hit was great, good vapor. So I decided to purchase a starter kit and experience the real thing, if you will. I purchased this kit: eGo 650mAh w/ CE4 Clearomizer Blister Pack Starter Kit - MyFreedomSmokes.com - 650 mah eGo, eGo CE4 1,8 ohm clearomizer... The reviews on the site seemed great and at a great price. I also purchased the 4 star PG 24mg nic e-liquid.

OK, so I followed the very simple instructions and it seems to be vaping correctly. I am currently using the lowest voltage, about 2-4 second hits... The taste seems fine, but for some the hits are very harsh. It doesn't taste burnt or burn really but nearly every hit is very "scratchy" tasting in my throat and lungs... Not near as smooth as the Blu e-cig I purchased and not nearly as enjoyable.

Do you think something is wrong? Could it be the type of juice? Amount of nicotine in the juice? What are some troubleshooting steps to see if what the problem might, I can't imagine this is normal, because like I say the hit from the Blu was a lot better, more "vapory" and just overall more pleasant. I was thinking about ordering another different style starter kit to compare. What do you think?

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Hi, and welcome to ECF! With the 1.8 ohm clearo, do be sure your battery is set at the lowest (3.2 v) setting. Also, make sure the wicks are fully saturated (you may need to keep tipping it to keep the wicks wet). I think you may be getting what are called dry hits, where the coil and/or wick isn't getting enough juice. Yuck!

Many new vapors will complain that the vapor is too harsh; many will find it necessary to cough. This phenomenon generally passes. It took us a while to get used to cigarette smoke, it can take your body a while to get used to warm vapor.

Having said that, you did say you did not experience the harshness with the disposable Blu cigalikes, which use cartridges (cartomizers). They most likely had a higher ohm (resistance rating) than the low resistance clearomizers you are now using. Low resistance produces a warmer vape, higher resistance a cooler vape. My suggestion would be to purchase a juice delivery device that has an resistance rating in the 2.0 - 2.5 ohm range and see is that is more comfortable for you.

I don't think the 24mg nicotine strength is the issue. Both the Blu and the other juices you have both have the same strength nicotine, so I think the issue is the juice delivery device.

Good advice about "tipping or tilting" a string-wicked delivery device. Those wicks need to stay wet or you will get dry hits.

I coughed a lot when I first started. Then I switched to nearly pure vg and did not experience the same discomfort in the throat (Johnson creek that produces the juice for blu are pure vg too). Even now pg juices makes me have throat discomfort. Try that, but ymmv since everyone reacts differently to juices. I also have specific flavored vg juices that make me cough, likely due to the flavoring ingredient.

could be the 25% is too high for you, but what is your PG/VG ratio? the higher the PG the stronger the throat hit. either could be the issue.

personally, i'd try ordering some different juice before springing for a new kit

I'm using a 100% PG juice at the moment. I have a VG juice as well. The tank is almost empty from the PG so I may just add the VG in there and see if that makes any difference.

Thanks for all the suggestions, you guys are a great help.

Flavoring usually about 15%- could be higher or lower depending on the flavor used.
PG enhances flavor, TH and lung hit- water like - many of us believe PG to be a throat irritant.
VG= vapor and can mute flavor- thick
Nicotine- TH, lung hit and our need for nicotine. The MOST important ingredient in regards to TH and lung hit.
Standards in the industry are 80/ 20 or 70/ 30 PG/ VG
