I have been using solid SS mesh wicks without issue for a while now. I decided to try a hollow one to see how the wicking differs, but I am having all sorts of trouble with shorts.

I feel like I oxidized the heck out of the mesh the second try just to be sure, but I did it more so after rolling it than before. I made sure it wasn't touching the bottom of the tank or too close to the center post. Still, my resistance varies up and down between 0.8 to 2 ohms at any given moment and my provari of course throws me E1 errors, assuming the wire doesn't pop before then.

This seems like a short to me, but I can't figure out where in the world it is coming from. I never had an issue with the solid wicks, outside of my very first one. Is there some trick I'm missing to this?

If it matters, it is being set up on my AGA-T+, 33awg A1 kanthal, and tried 400 and 500 mesh.
