I’ve read ecf for quite a few years, just never really joined in on the conversations. I guess I’m starting to now. Also does anyone know why I can’t message someone first?

You should be able to now. Members in the "New Members" group cannot initiate PMs. Once you post a few times, that restriction gets lifted. It's an anti-spam measure that we take.
