People making the switch to e-cigs are costing tax revenue, especially in NY where the effing tax on a pack of smokes is insanely high.

So while the politicians say the purpose of the tax is to offset future medical care costs, which is somewhat legit, it has also been money in-hand right now for the state. E-cigs/vaping could reasonably be taxed relative to the potential health risk it imposes on the user (bearing in mind no 2nd hand smoke, and the only damage is really from the nicotine itself and maybe some potential risk from the glycol or other additives being in the lungs; hey it ain't vitamin C) so the tax should be minuscule compared to that imposed on analogs.

The options are pretty much:

1) make politicians see a benefit from e-cigs (be it through tax revenue or some other immediate benefit to them)
2) Educate and mobilize the voting populace who isn't addicted to nicotine. Yeah, good luck with that.

I'm not too worried, I believe there will always be a way to get juice and replacement batteries even if they do outlaw the stuff for open sale. Hell, I know people who still get cigs tax-free from other countries or from reservations and that stuff has been illegal for years. The biggest liability is that it will make it harder for new people to find the product and use it to quit analogs, which plays perfectly well into the tobacco lobby's hands.

Send email, write letters, do SOMETHING!

Your personal freedom depends on it.
Well, sending emails is almost useless, but yeah, it's better than nothing.
Anybody who really cares to make a difference should be writing letters if not making phone calls.

But doing something, even if it is only sending emails, is far better than doing nothing.

You are absolutely correct, and we all need to make sure the facts are widely known...

Tobacco products are basically supposed to be taxed in relation to the harm they are believed to cause.
And because of that, electronic cigarettes should be taxed at rates comparable to snuff and snus.

I assume these are the current Federal Excise Taxes...

TTB Tax and Fee Rate...

Code:
Tobacco Products 1000 units Pack of 20
Small Cigarettes $50.33 $1.01
Large Cigarettes $105.69 $2.11
Small Cigars $50.33 $1.01

Tobacco Products 1 lb. Tin or Pouch
Pipe Tobacco $2.8311 $0.1769
Chewing Tobacco $0.5033 $0.0315
Snuff $1.51 $0.0944
Roll-your-own Tobacco $24.78 $1.5488

That doesn't mean they won't do something outrageous and without justification.
But it will be up to all of us to fight to make sure everyone is, at the very least, properly educated.

I am going to insist on a face to face with my state senator, but this guy Marcelino is as PC and corrupt as they come. I'll park my behind in his office for days if need be, I'm pretty PO'd. I finally found a solution to get off analogs and these jerks want to take it away. I WILL break whatever laws they pass.

Emails won't work. You need to get in their faces. I will offer to go to Albany when this stupid proposal gets to the floor on the senate and congress in NYS. That is the sort of thing that will have to be done. Make a lot of noise. Become an activist. See if one can even get media involved.

I will also do the same with my congressman, Peter King. One thing about King, he's responsive and NOT PC. He is a polititian that will take on an unpopular position. King has also answered the two emails I have sent him over the years. We have no voice other than our own in this fight. It's time to fight back, LOUDLY.

I just got my starter kit several days ago, and am expecting some carts tomorrow, so...

Who are your state legislators? Where are you located? I'm in Hicksville. An organized protest... would be fun, and maybe even effective. I wonder if V4L would promote such a thing? I mean they email us all the time... why not help us to help them?

I Love My OLD Brooklyn. But MY Brooklyn is gone and I don't see her comming back. I wanted to raise my little ones here, so they "get" what "I got", but it is gone. I think its time to put up the Tombstone at the edge of the Verrazano Bridge and find a new home.
I am becoming one of those old guys who say "back in my day..."
Sad... very, very SAD...

I remember reading a story from NY that some small town trying to pass a law to put license plates on all bicycles. They were saying it was because too many young people knock into the elderly. Are you kidding me. They just wanted the money to register each bike. Do you think if a child knocked down an elderly person, they would get the license plate number?
