Hubby just called and they are closing his plant. He won't know officially if he has lost his job for another 2-3 weeks since some people will get to stay at another office close by as a "skeleton crew". But, it looks very bad for him. The only little ray of hope is that just a few weeks ago a very important customer for this company sent in a letter to all the big wigs of his company praising my hubby for what a great job he does and how much of an asset to the company he is. Honestly I don't think it will help him keep his job if the work just isn't there.

He's been a hard worker all his life, and has sometimes worked 2 jobs to make sure we had a roof over our heads. He's never had this happen to him before. I feel so bad for him, and I just don't know what to do or say. I haven't worked in 16 years, I don't think even Walmart would hire me, I'm so out of it, and how much would that help?

I know I'm not alone in this crap, we will survive. I just hate this unknown, and how we'll survive. With hubbies health problems I worry about what the stress of all this will do to his body.

These are the times I wish I could be an alcoholic, just drink myself into the point of not caring. But, I hate taste of most alcohol, and I'm such a lightweight more than 2 drinks and I'm in trouble.

BTW, anyone know what websites people use to look for jobs now? I'm sure long gone are the days of looking in the news paper. He'll be working on his resume since I think most are e-mailed now.

Thanks for letting me whine.

I am sorry about the trouble! Mike went through that 3 times in the last 10 years of his working life. The last time was 4 years ago..he was 61, in poor health but could still do his job (run warehouses) But forget finding a job at that age! We finally gave up after running through most of our savings (the other 3 job losses took the majority). he finally just took early SS.
In Florida the company's come here for the low pay scale and soon leave when they figure out that florida isn't really central to the rest of the U.S. shipping wise. Duh! Add that to the low cost of having things made in China, or Mexico. The job market sucks..but keep plugging away, you just may find a good job! Mike found them..
The first step is a good resume. have printed copies on nice paper for when you go in for an interview. Have a nice suit..and an office casual outfit ready to go. we found that some company's ask you to dress casual. The on-line job searches are many! Some are pay for leads, most are not.
Just type "Job search engines" Sign up for as many as possible and be prepared for a flood of jobs that have nothing to do with what you guys want! I suggest making hubby a screen name for his job search stuff or your e-maill will be overflowing. That also will keep any spam off your main name. Once he is back to work..delete the name, believe me it's easier then trying to get off thier lists.
Don't forget to sign up for benifits in your state!

I'm so sorry to hear this! It sucks! The economy isn't "getting better" no matter what anyone says....I think your best best is Craigslist - a lot of people are using it - my daughter found her current job on it( 3 years ago).

MK is right about a separate email address - solves a lot of problems down the road.

Search Jobs. Find Employment. Look for Work & a Career | Monster.com is how I have my current job. I live in OK and I work for a company based out of MD, but it works for me. So sorry to hear this distressing news. bee is correct about things not getting better. It's a media blitz so people will get out and vote in my opinion. I'm not sure how far you are from Great Lakes Naval base but if it's not far look for jobs there. Most of the people who work there are employed thru Goodwill Industries. They do all the mail, issueing and logistics for the base. Also Abbott Labs is all over around there. Not sure whay type of jobs they have. I will say an extra prayer for you and your hubby :D

Thank you so much stover. He did start working on a resume last night. But, he seems to think the company will actually send someone out to him and help him with a resume, and job hunting. This is all assuming he will loose his job. We really have to wait out the next couple of weeks and see what happens. Now that the big guns have made the decision, it's up to his immediate boss who will stay and move to another plant, and who will be let go. That is NOT a job I would want.

I just started learning to play the guitar earlier this year. (teaching myself) I told hubby I better work harder on the guitar then I can stand on the street corner and play for money. He told me to try just playing really badly, maybe I could make more money by people trying to get me to stop. At least we can still laugh.

We lost a good paying plant in our area too, Moore Business Forms. They supplied forms world-wide, but they blamed it all on the trend for less paper being used in businesses, but truth be known the company was way too top-layer generous. They failed to adjust to needs. There are still a couple plants running, but I've lost track of them.
So sorry this hits you too. MK is right, the older you get the harder it is to 'find' something you don't have to pick up and start another new life, a rickety one! Choices diminish with age.
May be helpful to look into something more stable, career-wise, that he could tie his experience with. School!! Yikes.
Scarey stuff. My best to you all.
Sure a good thing this was the Summer of Recovery, eh? Summer's about over, where I am.

Too bad you're not closer because my daughter gives guitar lessons. You and her could go on the road and make us all rich ;)

Agh, the board ate my reply, lets try this again shall we.

If she teaches then she's probably mastered the art of playing the guitar, and it sounding good, plus actually singing at the same time.

When I try, it feels like walking and chewing gum at the same time, you'd think it would be easy but for some reason I just can't get it. :) Not that I can sing, and actually sound good, but I figure I gotta at least try.

Sounds like we'd get along great then. My favorite place to hang out as a teen was either in the music room or on the weekends go to a music store. I don't play a whole lot of instruments thought. I used to play the trumpet, that is until one of my nephews kinda took it so he could learn to play it. He plays the drums, and the guitar, so when he looked at me with the big eyes I couldn't say no to letting him have my trumpet.

I was away from music for a while when the kids were smaller, now that they aren't babies I miss that part of me. I thought the guitar would be a good idea. I know it'll take years to get a good hold on this guitar but part of the fun is in the journey. I recently saw a video on you tube of a lady in her 60's playing really good blues on an electric guitar. She started 10 years earlier, so if she can do it, I'm not to old either.

Oh gosh stover you should be so proud of your daughter. She is my idol, I'd be happy to play guitar as good as her, but she also knows base, that's awesome. :headbang:

She did really well you couldn't tell she only had a few days. Your hubby's band is good too. You have very musically talented people in your family.

Someone recently gave me a base, I had to save it from the garbage. No instrument should ever be thrown out, someone can use it. I figure maybe in a few years (or 10) I can pick that up too. It's not a great base, and it's missing a few minor things, like strings, and a nut. My teenage son surprisingly (to me) has had his eyes on the base.

Look,
Thank you so much. Hubby is on our other computer right now appling for jobs. No one is going to say he isn't trying hard enough. I'm debating looking too. Just a small job at Walmart or Mcdonalds, something while he is at home to help out. Full time would be nice just so we'd have health insurance. (but that probably won't happen) He worked at this job for 7 years, if he had been there 9 years he would get his cobra paid for by the company. 2 more years go figure.

Thank you all, any prayers, or positive thoughts are welcome. I don't really care what happens to me, if I lived out of my car I wouldn't let it get me down. (and just our luck, I made the last car payment 2 months ago, yey!!) Been down tough roads before and it didn't kill me. We will get through this too, and he will find a job, eventually. I just remind myself it's only a job. That is all they can take away from us is a job. All the important things are still right here. Both DH and I have had our little pitty party and it's time to move on.

You know back when I was a single Mom and I needed extra money I used to work for a company that set up in stores and gave out samples, you know like in grocrey stores?
I actually made pretty good money, If I remember right $75.00 for a 4-5 hour day.
These kind of companies are always looking for what they call demonstrators and are easy to work for, you pick your days that you can work or not.

Thanks, Look that maybe something I could look into. I know they are all over, places like costco, you can eat lunch at costco for free just walking around. The problem with Costco is you end up spending $200 on "just a few things".

Stover, its easy to have a good outlook with my hubbies attitude. He's amazingly positive about the whole thing. I'm really proud of him, and who knows what kind of doors this experience will open up. Don't forget to include all those people who have been out of work for a long time. I know some people are way worse off than we are. Thank you again.
