Oh my gosh - it has hold of me again

I have been working non-stop. I thought oh even though I already have some SS mesh wicks made let's go for another one. I seriously rub my fingers raw trying to make it fit. Then I decided to try some hemp thread that I have - first one great but you know I had to try again. Then all of a sudden I cannot get my ohms right even though I am doing it the same way I always have.
Anyway!

Here I sit literally hours later vaping along - exhausted. I am going to get a couple of hours of sleep before I get back on this hehe.

OH! I am just going to throw this out there. The fear of looking like a fool - well it was gone with the post that started this thread.

Is it possible. . . that for some reason. . .. my hole that I am putting the SS mesh in is smaller or is it guaranteed that they are all the same size. The reason I ask is well I have been able to fit the 1.5 x 3 wick a couple of times. The majority of the time I have to trim some off. Also when I first started and watched a video of someone using the drill bit to wrap the coil - the size bit they were using (more than one video) did not fit in mine.

Also where is the teacher when you need him. . . *clearing throat at ehuman*

If I am completeing the wick and it is solid - I mean there is not anymore solid it could possibly get. .
When I start to place it in the hold it gets jammed (here is where it may get confusing). It will start to bunch up - the top layer will begin to move away and start a ripple(?)

Is it possible that I am rolling it with too much pressure? My fingers are beyond sore just after the first roll. I am about to just post a video of my ill attempt at rolling so someone can say WHOA at 7:35 you messed up :p

This is what I get for laying it down and walking away. Like starting all over - but with higher expectations. The first build I was just happy to see clouds now it needs to be . . . perfect. :2cool:

Morning Agats and Agatettes. I really wish that I had a better camera so I could shoot a decent video of rolling a wick for you. I never considered it before because there are so many videos out there already.

Two wicks rolled "identically" back to back can be slightly different in reality since we are not machines. I think 80% of my success in rolling one tight and solid (or as small as possible for the size piece I'm using) happens in the first 20% of the roll. I will back it up a few times working that tiny hole out until it is non existent before continuing. If it doesn't start solid, it won't end up solid no matter how much you punish your fingers and will it to compress more. The other 20% comes in how I physically hold the wick, not allowing any of my hard work to unravel. It is like a spring, If I release tension it will uncoil inside a little.

Regardless of how well you are able to get a tight solid wick rolled, it is important that it fit in the hole without any force, so it is better to trim a little bit off if necessary than to try and cram it in if it didn't get rolled tight enough. I guess a good way to put it is, "get as much mesh as YOU can to fit" into the hole. Each person will be a little different.

Wicking questions: I vape 70%VG and never have to tilt, even when the juice level is below the bottom of the glass.

There is a difference in wick hole size between the original Aga-T, which may be the videos you watched, and the Aga-T2. The original Aga-T, I can fit a 7/64 drill bit, but my Aga-T2 only fits a 3/32. Personally, I prefer the larger wick hole of the original Aga-T.

Hey Bad, do you need to tilt? I have to tilt sometimes especially with 12+ watts on my AGA, wondering if i still need to improve my wick.

Make sure you're rolling your wicks with the 'grain' of the mesh going lengthwise. If you roll with the grain the other way, it won't wick as well.

This is great advice. I had a heck of a time getting 1.5 x 3" mesh into the stock wick hole until I learned his. Make sure it's very tight at the beginning and the rest just kind of follows tightly. I'm also now using the "palms down" method of rolling wicks -- don't have your palms up facing you using your thumbs for pressure; instead have your palms down and use your index and middle fingers against your thumbs for pressure. For some reason I get much more even, straight wicks doing it that way and the end of the mesh ends up in a straight line up and down the wick.

Now the wick hole is drilled out to 1/8" and I have zero problem getting a 1.5" x 4" wick to fit loosely. I really recommend anyone struggling consider drilling out the wick hole if possible.

Thank you!! I am going to go with that as to the reason mine will never fit. ;)

It actually makes a difference. I rolled a beautiful wick un-oxidized, wrapped it in 30ga for a 1ohm coil, pulsed it in my mechanical mod and had a great coil in a matter of minutes -- but it didn't wick well at all. I looked and I had rolled against the grain. Rolled another with the grain and it wicks just fine.

I will second the importance of this. I've been vaping on gennies for only 4 months and in that time I've only rolled 3 wicks. When I rolled the last one I made sure the grain ran lengthwise top to bottom, which I didn't do before. I stupidly cut the width of my mesh to 2.5" of 500 mesh, not paying attention that I was rewicking for the original Aga-T, so there is a huge hole down the center. I used to have to do a primer pull every 5-6 drags to get juice to the top of my previous wicks, but this new wick with the lengthwise grain and only oxidizing the top wicks like crazy. I've been through a couple of tanks with no need to tilt and the wick absorbing to the last drop of juice.

I am the kind of person that needs a detailed list of how to do something. If I don't have that then I will have it in my head that it has to be exactly the way I was shown, if it doesn't work for me then I have done something wrong. So now I am seeing the length, I can trim if needed but the way it is rolled is important.

Hybrid SS Mesh and Hemp wick on AGA-T+/2 with ribbon kanthal coil

Okay so I was just looking around on here and stumbled across this. Anyone try this - you know me just trying to make things more complicated

Z I've used a similar set up accept that I rolled the mesh around the end of the silica or hemp rope. It wicks better for me and the exposed rope also absorbs most of the condensation in the chamber. Main benefit is that I do not get any leaks in my pocket or dry hits.

I actually did something like that yesterday after watching a video. They rolled a tiny piece of ss mesh around the ends of the silica. I did it but I just didn't understand what the mesh at the end was for. I also didn't use silica as I do not have any. I use hemp thread.

So as I hang my head in self proclaimed victory:toast: as well as shame  (double edged sword for sure) I vape away with a 45mm by 45mm ss mesh roll. Baby steps . . . move up a little each time is my plan.

Oh that reminds me - enlarge the wick hole. . . .. :pop:

I am quite certain by this point I am starting to irritate some people with my constant pleas for help (trust me I am sorry)- but yeah here is another.

Have the SS mesh wick fitting at 1.5 x 2.5 coil is beautiful no hot spots. When I put the SS wick inside the coil - my Provari throws every error code it has at me. Take the wick out - beautiful red glowing coils - wick back in E!, E8 etc.

At this point can we all just have an actual meeting and someone can just show me how to do it and then I will get it. Then this thread may rest :tumble:

Do you have another devise you can try it on to work out the short? The Provari is kinda particular with Genesis attys. Sounds like you are real close to having it right. I'd pulse it and tweak the coils slightly wet...let the juice burn off and kind of season the mesh and coils. This gets rid of the smaller hot spots for me. Vape it a bit then you should be able to put it back on the Provari and boogy on down the road.

The mesh is just to allow easier insertion of the silica wick into the wick hole(s) without taking the tank apart. After it's inserted it doesn't serve a purpose. It's like the ends of a shoelace having that little aglet thing to allow you to put them through the holes.
