Thanks everyone. We've been working on clearing and closing the rooms we know that the missing cat is not in, especially since we're running an ozone generator to get the smoke smell out of the dead tree books, and have to be sure that the cat is not in a room before we run it.

We have a couple of live traps, but of course my daughter had borrowed them last fall, and forgot to bring them along when she came up. She'll be back in another week or two and promised to bring them then. The cat in question has always been shy to the point of spooky (fits right in with the household) which makes it extra challenging.

Setting up the new laptop today, and can't help but wonder why Windows still doesn't include a lock out of the power saving when it's doing an upgrade. I got just enough of an intro to Windows 8 today to be anxious to get 8.1 installed, since in typical Microsoft style 8.1 provides ways to work around the more annoying "improvements" included in 8.

Anyhow, that means that my current job is to lean over and tap the space bar every couple of minutes. When I get impatient I just have to remember hours of swapping floppy disks to set up computers back in the dark ages. The instructions said to go ahead and keep working during the download. Yeah, sure, you betcha, I'll go check out that bridge that I bought in New York while I'm at it.

The bit with my mother all those years ago has to have been the single most important thing that I ever learned in life. The second most important has to have been that there's always something to laugh about, even if it's just myself. Between the two life is a whole lot better than a lot of people make it.

Sounds like another long-term Microsoft beta-tester... don't you feel like they should be paying US, to beta-test their stupid software??

I think you're referring to what you said about picking your battles? I used to tell my son that all the time -- it's not worth it to get all upset over every little thing, because there's usually not a lot that can be done about some things. And the funny... you bet! I like to watch the silliest stuff on TV, just cause it tickles my funny bone, and to me, that is GOLDEN. My husband gets annoyed because I LOVE!!! Big Bang Theory, but those nerd guys are hysterical. Or The Simpsons, one of the more intelligent shows on TV, IMHO, and also Futurama, which is just silly, but fun. He wants to watch Steven Seagal beat some guy bloody, he can do it in his own room! *I* will be in here laughing at silliness!!! Even if I have to read Jane Austen to find it! ;)

I've been beta testing for Microsoft since dos 2.2, so I figure nothing has or will change on that front. But I don't much like Apple, and after my last employer went with Linux Ubuntu and I worked with that for a while, I decided that I can keep living with Microsoft.

I'm kind of exited about the new laptop. I have nerve damage in my hands and can't really type anymore, but as dearly as I love my kindle fire hd it has some pretty severe limitations. (Though it still out computes any of my early PCs.) So when I got the chance to go computer shopping I ended up choosing a full scale laptop that also has a touchscreen. Playing with it today before I got into the updates it really does seem to offer the advantages of both a"regular" computer and a tablet.

Of course there goes my last excuse for not getting the taxes done, especially since I had a pension payout last year that was way over withheld, so that's my new refrigerator fund.

I think I got started right around DOS 3.11 or somethng like that. I remember the big hullaballoo over 4.0, then 4.01, then on and on... but it seems not many really "get" DOS anymore -- not that they ever did! hehehehe

That's exactly the kind I want! I do type, but it would be great to have a touchscreen sometimes. I figure I can sqeak maybe another year about of this P4 2.8 w/winXP Pro, before any and all support for XP is *gone* -- told the ol man we could pay off some bills with this years tax return, and I think we may need to get a new TV for his room, where we usually watch together; his is the old tube style and it's about ready for the TV heaven in the sky. fortunately those 32" LEDs are REALLY coming down in price! But next year -- new PC is a must-have; once programs no longer support your OS, you're SOL!

I can't wait til spring so I can dig in the dirt or something fun.

When I started playing in the dirt, most of my problems with depression simply went away. It's magical!! When those ads come on TV for some antidepressant to supplement the one you're already taking, i start ranting at the screen: go do some gardening, you'll feel better! :D

That's the upside to setting your house on fire. :D Lots of new stuff. But I am getting shopped out. At least I don't have to go out and about to do it. We're already getting friendly with the UPS and FedEx drivers. Though I did have one of my rare disagreements with Amazon. This is a really tiny town, with no curbside mail delivery, so we get a free PO box. We still have a valid physical address for deliveries, but as soon as I put the box number in my address they decided that we could only get packages sent USPS. Annoying since I like my two day Prime delivery.

Ended up talking to our postmaster and she agreed to the subterfuge of putting Number xx on the second address line. ;-) With the 9 digit zip that's good enough for the post office. It could be a little confusing to a substitute FedEx or UPS driver, since there isn't a building in town with more than two units, but the regular drivers got a good laugh out of it.

So after only five hours my Windows update is finishing up. Now admittedly our internet connection isn't super high speed, but this was to go from 8 to 8.1 on a brand new uncluttered computer.

And I spoke too soon -- that was just the reboot after the download. It's now at fifteen percent of "setting up" and I'm thinking that at least when this involved hours of swapping floppy disks you felt like you were doing something.

Is the floppy in my hand the one I just took out, or waiting to go in... :vapor::vapor::vapor::vapor::cool:

But I don't miss 3.1 at all. XP was good, 7 is better. 8 is, I suppose, fine if you have a touch screen, but not something I'll be going to any time soon. Rumor control central is now talking about the next iteration (2015... ish.... ) maybe coming in touch and non-touch varieties.
