You'd be surprised, it might still work. They had interpreters that would convert the pulses to DTMF tones for a long time and you know the phone company, they never take anything off line until in craps out for good. Could still be one online and working. Plug it in and give it a shot, never know and I'd be curious.

We use Majik Jacks and Google Phone as our land line phones nowadays.

Oh and to add - the Philippines did not get off the rotary phone until the 80's... They are always a few decades behind - except for texting... They are currently the text capitol of the world.

I've been trying to talk my son into getting a majic jack for when I stay over there. Any time dil's parents go out of town son and dil stay at their house to take care of their dog who just flips out if you try to even take her to the vet. Sometimes I'll stay at son and dils house when they are at her parent's house. But they have no land line and I have no cell phone other than a 10 cent a minute trac phone that my nephew has and never uses. it works in a pinch, but I can't get gabby with anyone if I'm bored. lol

I've been trying to talk my son into getting a majic jack for when I stay over there. Any time dil's parents go out of town son and dil stay at their house to take care of their dog who just flips out if you try to even take her to the vet. Sometimes I'll stay at son and dils house when they are at her parent's house. Shoot, with the newer majik jacks you do not need a computer anymore - just a internet modem to plug into and then a phone to plug into that. We keep a phone at each house and then I just pop the majick jack into my pocket when I go from one place to another. And when we travel - we have a small phone that fits in the side pocket of our travel on luggage.

Also, while I have not tried it yet - there is an app that current majik jack owners can use and your calls will be forwarded to your cell phone - not using your minutes either - data usage only.

oh I didn't know that it didn't use your minutes, but I did know you could xfr them to the cell. But they would never really use it. I just figured it would be a cheap way for them to have a phone if their cells ever went out. and for me to have one when I'm there.

Matt, that's so cool! I don't remember phone numbers that short, but we did have a party line and our number was EL7-3808 (Elmwood) I forget how many rings was us though. That's weird, I don't remember people's names, but do remember my childhood phone number...

uh oh - I remember that number too. Had it committed to memory. Does that mean I robbed the cradle.

My mother was an operator when I was a child - used to have old pics of her just like the one you posted - the phone we had was called the princess. I remember when they upgraded to digital dial phones, but with the princess they kept the same phone shell and updated only the face to push button. Here we go again - reminiscing.

Useless factoid about telephone switchboard operators. Originally Ma Bell choose to use teenage boys for switchboard operators. But it didn't workout. Too many customers complained about rude, crass and impatient operators. It didn't last long and they switched over to the distaff side to 'man' their switchboards.
