In my opinion, if eating sushi and sashimi feels like taking a bite of raw fish, it's not good sushi and sashimi. When I go to a good buffet that has them, I ignore just about everything else. I absolutely love it. Gourmand that I am, I even get off on stuff that's mediocre in quality, but I can definitely tell the difference between the OK stuff and the really good stuff.

Good fresh fish is of course key to good sushi, and it's possible to have good fresh fish even if it's been frozen along the way. But the biggest factor, surprisingly, is the preparation of the cheapest ingredient, the rice.

Yup, the rice is important! I'm not fond of sashimi, but I like sushi a lot. We have a friend who is an itamae of sushi. His family own a Japanese restaurant; he apprenticed with his father for years. His sushi and mine bear no resemblance to one another :)

Looks like I missed a couple of vapervesaries. Happy Vaperversary to 0mg and Dancing!!!!! Way to go! I hope you girls bought yourself something shiny - you deserve it! :toast:

LB~ How are you feeling?

Really enjoyed reading about the trips down memory lane. I have several old cameras that belonged to my grandfather and father that are very precious to me.

Roto, Mike, Miles, Iffy, Matt, Uman - hope everyone gets better soon!

It's really good, provided that the fish is perfectly fresh. The citric acid "cooks" the fish a bit, so it doesn't have the "taking a bite of raw fish" feel that sushi or sashimi has.

Still raw fish...

My ancestors learned about fire some time back, and it does wonders for food :)

Nice! Very nice! Thanks for telling us the story. That must have been so heart warming for you.

I have my Dad's tools and when ever I need to use a claw hammer, I go for his. I still remember being in his basement one day and as he picked it up, he told me he made it in high school shop class. I though to myself - yikes - I made a stupid ash tray in metal class - he made an actual claw hammer that he later used to build his own house. Yes - that hammer has meaning for me. :)

wow, that's so neat!!

We had fresh caught grilled lobster (it's lobster season here), grilled dolphin fish fillets, burgers, Pineapple & goat pepper chutney, sautéed onions, and conch & lobster ceviche.

#NOM

How do you like your ceviche............me: sauteed please  Never had it, but not big on raw meat of any kind. and if the citrus juice really cooks it as folks say, then no one should mind me tossin in it a skillet for a few minutes! @ Bells, I did know what it was, just never had it. Goat peppers on the other hand I did have to look up. Looks like they are related to habero, scotch bonnets.

Anyone else here had to wear flour sack 'jammas as a lil' yute?

Newp, but made flour sack aprons as an older yute.

Now why does everyone think that is cute but no one thinks tarantulas are cute? Tarantulas have tiny little hands and big eyes. Tarantulas are not sloths. Tarantulas have a mildly toxic bite.

Ok....spiders creep me out big time! don't like em.....but.....I watched that and wasn't creeped out for some reason. I woulda been if I'd been anywhere near it in real life.

It was 70 degrees when I got up today. 70!!! I'm STILL running around here in the hangar and in my office in short sleeves!! I actually had to ditch the blanket last night and put a fan on. Those apartments have NO insulation at all and we just go with the flow. Now, the weather forecast shows that by Thursday morning we will have freezing rain. Hopefully by the time that rolls in, I will be home.
44 here still was supposed to be 70, then 69 now saying 68, gets cooler each time I look, I gotta quit lookin.

You should be here with me. Mom has the heater set on 75 & I'm in my room with the air vent closed & the fan going!

Sounds just about perfect to me!! But yes, you are a wonderful daughter!!

Y’know how it is when you wake up one morning after several days of being badly sick, and before you even get out of bed, you realize you feel better than yesterday?

well if ya aint gonna go to da doc, hope you do at least stay in bed! Feel better very soon!

mornin y'all!!! So this is what morning looks like after you've had sleep. On a day schedule and trying so hard to stay on it! Mostly cuz of the cold that is coming back in a few days. Down to low and mid 20's. Last couple weeks I was up and in the cold living room at night which is coldest. Now I'm in bed for the coldest part and the bedroom is warmer! This is a much nicer way to do it! Hoping I can stay like this at least til it warms up.

The only way I'd try to convince someone to eat something that they say they wouldn't like is if they had never tried it. Decent sushi and sashimi have no fishy smell whatsoever, and the fish is not the least bit tough, chewy, slimy or gamy. It's got melt-in-your-mouth tenderness.

Been trying my whole life, never make it more than a week or so if that. Usually a few days. So am doing good this time! I'm just a night person.

I tried lox one time.....didn't know that's what it was. I just can't deal with the texture.

Well, that leaves a lot more for you! ;)

Hay, did anyone notify the weatherman that it was March?

Yeah, I must admit I wouldn't put much energy into trying to convince someone to try sushi or sashimi once they'd told me that they'd already tried lox and didn't care for it. Heavily salted, lightly salted (Nova), doesn't matter to me. If it's smoked salmon, I love it.

On Sushi : Bread it in Zatarain's and deep fry it, I'm in .. ;)

And no, here in Fly Over Country, the Weather Folks have not yet been informed .. of course, they tend to actually somehow take a weird perversion in bad weather, unseasonable weather, etc .. "We're here for you" .. ;)

Weather Folks seem to be more mediatheatric than they used to be. It has become all about ratings. It is fun to see how they psyche people into thinking that the weather is more important than any other aspect of the news.

Exactly .. of course, IMO, all New Casts these days have become, er, less about news .. personally, I don't see the need for Weather People anyway when a mouse click brings up the info any time .. what I find really odd is the Cult of Weather Chasers that has somehow grown a following .. "Hey, kids, let's pack a lunch and hit the road. There is a Tornado Warning on in the next County and don't forget the lawnchairs." ..

Well, gotta admit they got the "comes in like a lion" part right!

Regarding the theatrics of weather reporting: let's not forget how much technology has been able to contribute to the accuracy of weather forecasting in recent times. It's easy to fixate on the errors, while overlooking how much more accurate weather reports are today than they used to was, and how much further in advance weather trends can be predicted today than even 20 years ago.

Now the smoke salmon that comes out a lil dried and cooked.........I love!!! The kind that comes out raw, can't see how that's smoked. lol

I always hoped that the Bikini Weather Girl would hit Nation Wide .. I'd heard of a few areas that had one .. this way, who cares about accuracy .. ?? "My Opinions are Mine Alone and Do Not Reflect the General Consensus of Any Other Thread Member or Poster" ... :)

Yep, my Body should actually be consulted prior to any Weather Cast .. ;)

I rented "Into the Storm" at the RedBox a while back .. it's no "Twister" but it's pretty good .. and then, there is always "Sharknado" .. ;)

Rotowoman, You don't happen to work for PHI do you? I don't even know if they're still around, Petroleum Helicopters International. Had a friend who worked for them I the seventies as a controller/scheduler.

Clnire, do you have a minute for dog advice? Our two 4 year old chihuahuas are litter mates, and have always gotten along very nicely. Over the past two weeks, one of the dogs periodically attacks the other -- baring teeth, then growl, then pounce! Neither is sick (they were at the vets three weeks ago). This seems to happen when I have both dogs sitting with me. I'm wondering if the attacker is "worried" that his brother is going to get more attention ... Any ideas and/or suggestions? (Thank Heaven for the back porch!)
It's a dominance thing. One is trying to establish his place as "top dog" and your caught in the middle. At least that me opinion and I'm sticking to it!
