Yeah, with you on the privacy - and both of my systems that run 10 are locked down as much as possible. There are now several good and trusted programs you can dl and use free to re-lock if needed.

But OS upgrades - version upgrades, not patches - have never before been free.
Not exactly free, just seemingly free. It comes on new computers because they sell it really cheaply to the companies that put it on new computers and to libraries and such. Point being to make it what everyone is used to. Then, they not only monopolize what people are buying, but make a fortune off companies that pay to make sure they're compatible.

My irritation with MS goes back to when I was programming.

But how is that different from Apple? Locked into their system, won't license anyone else to make peripherals or even cheaper "clones". Yes, my OS is Windows (7 and 10), but none of my hardware is from Mickey. And, if I choose, I can reformat and install Linux, and everything will still work. Can't do that with a Mac. (And it was Apple that put all the computers in schools years back, to get kids hooked on their systems.)

Bottom line, imo, is that hardware, software and user desires are always changing, and all the OS makers keep trying to keep up and, to a degree, shape those desires. Not all "legacy" devices, hard and soft, will stay on the bus, although many will. As users, we just need to keep in mind that what we "need" is hardware that will run the software we want. I have some mission critical software that needs Win, so that's what I run. (Nope, it won't run under Wine on Linux!)

And any new OS comes with a learning curve. And bumps.

I bought my first Mac in 1998 and never looked back.

LOL. That noise you
hear is M$ about to bite you in the ....:) Resistance is futile. We used Linux for keeping tabs on our gambling."guests". Total disaster.
If you've seen the commercial where an IT guy has made himself a hammock out of cat5 cable I've often wondered if he is trying unsuccessfully to solve a Linux system problem and just finally decided to join The Collective.

They've always used freebies as a way to create a monopoly on the customer base. But, now they're harvesting lots of personal info that they have no right too. And, turning most of that stuff off does little good when they turn it back on at every update.
Amen.

My issues started years ago as a programmer and relate more to the point of view of someone trying to write software to be used in a particular OS.

Please, tell me more. I would prefer to know any issues/weaknesses in Linux before I install in, rather than after.

Some memories are coming back about my oldest daughter and Linux. She's used Linux for years. She told me (a long time ago) that Linux doesn't have nearly as many problems as Windows, but that, when it does have problems, the problems are much more difficult to solve.

Hmmm, maybe I should email her and arrange a Hang Out to get some advice.

Maybe I should think this through a little more before I act in anger and frustration.

It was a disaster from the viewpoint of the arcane interface. The GUI was not the best and command and control was never done from memory because of the syntax. If any one of us was called to go to the room where the Linux box was we took a "clue" book for reference. We used a version that came from Bally's since they manufactured the slot machines, etc., they were our "middle of the night rescue call". Anyhow, it has probably improved by now and you might like it. If nothing else set up a dual boot and then you have a choice.

I'll learn more about Prince in the next few days than I ever knew before. RIP Prince!

Hey @garyoa1, did you notice that Aljazeera America has shut down its cable and satellite operations? Well anyway, it has.
