Thanx, just hadn't heard of dat incident.

As fer picks, think I'm gonna pick myself a 'nice' capable 'unregistered' unit and dollar up fer a 'smart' phone (and possibly a 'learner' quad unit).

Then maybe we could do a gray market 'nicotine quad express' to avoid da Feds when dey crack down on both <delete dis post and triple reformat/scrub your hard drive after reading dis post!>!

In your experiences, do you recommend a built in camera or a Go-Pro compatible mount? And yes, I'm serious...

I can see it now .... Nicotine Droney Express.

Phil (aka Semi) et al, a major heads up and request for prayers and good vibes for the Philippine Isles with super typhoon KOPPU approaching!

Yea, it is staying North of my wife's family, but the center is going over our friends living over there (the ones that we visit in Tampa)... All prayers will be appreciated for them and the others in the country...

You could take it back and exchange it. I got a bad bottle of wine once and ended up dumping it. When I mentioned it at the store the next time they said I should have brought it back. Didn't even think about it since the bottle was opened with 2 glasses removed. Or, you could just stab a whole in the box and drink it all - wouldn't want it to go to waste...

LOL....haven't got the nerve to stab or cut it yet. Going to call the store monday morning and ask about returning it for an exchange. Even in my best/worst ? drinking days.....5 liters and they would have had to scrape me off the floor....

Yes, I keep up with what's going on regarding potential regulation by the FAA. It's been an active subject for the whole two years that I've been flying these things. One crash of a airplane or helicopter caused by a drone would be one too many. Some regulation is needed.

Phantom quad copters like mine have built in databases of no-fly and restricted zones. The motors will not start up if the quad is in a no-fly zone. If you enter a no-fly zone while flying, the quad will land automatically. You do get a warning when you get within 100 meters of a no-fly zone. In restricted zones, altitude is limited to 400 feet. The same altitude limit applies if the GPS is in contact with less than 6 satellites.
This is DOT not FAA.

I'm a fan of the GoPro just because it's an easier upgrade. Don't have one yet but am heavy in the research department. As soon as I have fundage I'm there.

Advantage of a quad with a GoPro: possibly a better camera, and GoPros can record sound, while the built-in cameras do not (at least not on the DJI Phantom models anyway).

Disadvantage of a quad with a GoPro: it's going to cost you more, unless you already have a GoPro.

All 5 of the outdoor quads that I've owned have had integrated cameras.

Regardless of which way you go, I highly recommend that you get one with a 3-axis gimbal. Videos are definitely shaky without a gimbal, although still pictures will be just as good either way.

I have never been affected by a NoFly zone, but if I was within 5 miles of an airport that's on the registry that would be a different story.

Recommended "learner quad", for $94 shipped on Amazon Prime:

WASHINGTON (AP) — Waking up hundreds of miles above the Himalayas, astronaut Scott Kelly broke the U.S. record Friday for the most time spent in space with 383 days.

Kelly is more than halfway through a yearlong mission at the International Space Station and will eventually set a record for the longest single U.S. space mission.
Global Warming has made the years longer they are now 452 days.

I caught that, too. Halfway at 383 days? Huh?
Scott Kelly has been in space for a little over half a year on this mission, but 383 days is his total time in space, adding the time of his several previous trips.
