Question: When you get new glass bottles do you rinse them before you use them? If I do I am not planning on using soap but just wondered if it was necessary. I gotta split up my nic and get it in the freezer. Still 1000's of people here without power and the temps are dropping into the teens at night. Man I'm glad we have ours back.

I don't worry about it but, I'm absolutely sure that someday that's gonna come back and bite me in the azz. Be safe rinse em in nice hot water, shake em out good and stick em in the dish drain to dry well first. That's the safe bet or you can just pour the stuff in em and not worry about it. Isn't PG antibacterial anyway?

You could always boil them too but then the little paper gaskets in the tops will fall apart. Of course if they have rubber gaskets in em then you got you some high class bottles. I can't afford dem. Where were they made would definately enter into my decision too. Also how lazy I feel that day.

I wash them with soap and water then I put them on for a short boil. I bring the water to a boil and then let them soak for a few minutes - I only use the poly caps - them I only rinse thoroughly with the water after I turn it down from a boil. - a while back RTS complained how dirty the bottles were when he received them and he had to do a thorough washing of them before he could sell them. Made me think more about cleaning mine better...

Patrick I highly recommend that you look into a standby generator. The cost isn't that bad if you have natural gas already on the property. If you have propane then you may need to get a bigger tank. A standby generator to handle your whole house (12-17kw) is around 4 grand and depending on how well you know your electrician $800 or so to install it. Sometimes Lowe's or Homely Despot will have a sale with free or discounted installation. As we get older it's harder to survive the cold and such. Doree and I have already discussed it and we're installing one as soon as I start working on the house down there. We don't have NG so I'm going to have propane installed anyway as neither of us can stand cooking on an electric stove. Haven't done it regularly in over 25 years. We have a big kitchen overhaul in the plans as the one there was put in in 1972 and MIL was all about inexpensive (cheap) so everything is builder's grade junk.

I haven't, but maybe others might. If it makes you feel better you could rinse them out with some vodka. Just be sure they dry out well. It could take awhile because the neck is small.

That is what I do as well.

I buy the brown ones so they do not look dirty

It could take awhile because the neck is small.

I got the wide mouth packer bottles for my nic. But I have to drain them upside down first, but there is a spot of water (condensation or something) that always collects on the inside bottom of the bottle when they're upside down, so then I have to shake them to disperse it and let em air dry right side up. that's where some pga or vodka could come in handy but I usually don't have it.

My freezer "doomsday" stash, which I decanted into the blue, I think 240ml bottles, wrapped in tinfoil in order to protect from any stray gamma rays and was left over from one of my several tinfoil hats, then placed in a sock (not put a sock in it, yet, put a sock on it .. ..), were never washed prior to use .. in fact, I never thought about it ..

However, my stainless hipflask, does get a complete rinsing between fillings, even though the contents when filled are of an antibacterial nature .. .. I then place said hipflask on a burner of my electric stove and set it for "keep warm" for a half hour or so in order to dry the interior .. let cool, fill again, rinse and repeat ..

We must always set priorities ..
