Well, I did it again. Talking with the neighbor over the fence about some project work and put my foot in my mouth during the conversation. :w00t::D
I've done that all my life. Over the years I've picked up a little tact, but I still get in trouble.

The snow finally stopped!
I don't envy you guys at all. Snow would be straight culture shock down here.

Well i thought I would check in. Our power is out using my cell phone hot spot. Alls well here just getting kinda cold. Supposed to be 15 tonight. ETA for restoration is about 20 min but you know how that goes.
Oooh, please take care of yourselves!

Yay we have heat only got down to about 67 in here must be pretty well insulated.better then I thought
That's the one thing I can say about my house. It is well insulated, and that has been a HUGE blessing!

It's never too late ... health problems are my exact motivation to stay as fit as possible .. I may not be Jack LaLanne, but I'll outwork about any 25 year old ..
I know that's right. I already outwork my opposite, and can still outwork some of today's youngsters.

Just one of my reasons for my refusal to view today's talent as inferior, even though I fiercely love yesterday's.

I've never viewed some of today's talents as inferior. I just have my people picked. I do enjoy John Legend.

Not feeling too chipper...dang heavy cold... shoulda known it was coming when I had the need to take a long hot bubblebath in the middle of the afternoon yesterday!
I hope you feel better soon. You got that!!

Hello all. I was told i should stop by and check this place out. Have not read a thing as this looks like it will take some time.
Welcome to the Back Porch! Best place on the Web, in my humble opinion.

I'm way behind since I haven't been online in a couple of days. Figured I'd better stop with the multi quotes right now if this was to be readable. LOL

........ Anyhoo, @umanbean, I'll be happy to send you the LPs when I've finished converting them. I estimate there are about 150 LPs, and I'm a procrastinator who doesn't get things done quickly. (Remind me to get on the stick if I don't have it done in 10 years.) Plus, the conversion software is bit of a PITA and it's not just a matter of playing and saving. I'm hoping I can find a way to use different software but don't know if that's possible with this machine. I think, though, that LPs properly qualify as Media Mail. If so, that would be the economical way to go.

Thanks for the reply bb... It may be about 10 years before I can afford the postage on 150 LPs anyway. It didn't occur to me until after I posted that we're talking about a lot of weight.... put my mouth in motion before putting my brain in gear, as it were.

Maybe Audacity would work with your machine? Worth a try anyway. I've been reading quite a bit the last few days, and Audacity gets mentioned more often than any other audio programs for ripping, then "fixing" static, pops, and the other quirks of vinyl. I don't have any experience with it yet, but read somewhere that you can record an entire album side, name the tracks, then the program will automatically "separate" the songs and save them individually. Sounds like a great time/trouble saver to me. Good luck.

Yea, in the south they have no idea to handle even the smallest amount of snow. I remember back in 69 it dropped maybe 100 flakes of snow around Orlando Fl and they closed all schools for the day... :eek:o_O

Well it seems websites can now detect if you're using ad blocking add-ons in your browser.

I use Firefox with Adblock Plus installed, just went to download Audacity, and got this:

Dear fellow! It appears that you hate Ads! If you will consider a donation to FossHub, we will spend the money on buying more bandwidth and more servers to offer the best download speed.Thank you for any donation!

That's the second time this week I've gotten a similar message. That first website wouldn't let me proceed unless I turned off Adblock, so I just left.

Installed Audacity and Folks let me tell ya, that looks like one complicated program! I know -nothing- about audio, so have a lot to learn. Should be fun though....

When I lived in the SouthWest, the people just up from Mexico were responsible for a good share of accidents when it snowed. Many of them were uninsured, so it would be a nasty free-for-all. What would be a ho-hum snowstorm in Sioux City would shut down everything in that southwestern town.

Hey I could make that and it would start at 730 and go to 1030 just right for us might even get the Mrs. involved. Only problem is it is only 10 people might have to open and extra. They should have a Front Porch hangout for people who like to talk vape.

There are other, better, audio softwares commercially available, however, the freeware version of Audacity is the Gold Standard for, er, freeware in audio recording and manipulation .. it has a learning curve, but all software of this type does .. most USB turntables that I know of come with Audacity likely because of the cost .. ;)

The hassle of vinyl to digital conversions really boils down to .. it's done in real time .. if you want to remove hiss and pops it's much more time consuming .. the quality of your PC/speed, etc can play a role .. the software does not name tracks, so manual input is required .. automatic track separation is hit and miss .. on average, doing one LP right, with minimal fixing required, is at least an hour per LP .. as well, it's a good idea to route the PC output jack as a monitor set of speakers, since actually listening to the LP as it records is a good idea, just in case you get a skip or a groove that bounces the needle and repeats ..

Anyone considering this should think about the fact that most CD's can be had at used prices relatively cheap and will auto name, etc thru the Web and can be set to convert at about any bitrate .. and when you're done, you can still sell the CD's .. it's a question of "Is the juice worth the squeeze .. " :)

The draw of vinyl conversion is, you've digitized your old collection and can then dispose of it .. if you look back fondly on that one pop just as "Dark Side of the Moon" went into chorus, then don't remove the glitches .. :) .. because they were all part of the experience you fondly remember .. ;)

Lastly, rare vinyl that brings any kind of money is really LP's that were promotional, withdrawn/recalled, Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab pressings can be worthwhile, etc .. for the most part, however, LP's were pressed in high numbers and are not, as a general rule, greatly collectable .. a few examples of some real money LP's :

The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan [withdrawn version] (1963) ... Incredibly rare version of the US version (stereo) which features four songs left off all subsequent releases ("Rocks and Gravel," "Let Me Die in My Footsteps," "Gamblin' Willie's Dead Man's Hand," and "Talkin' John Birch Blues"). in Mint Condition : $30K

The Beatles .. Love Me Do / P.S. I Love You (1962) [Single] .. The UK promo copy of The Beatles' first single. Paul McCartney is credited as "McArtney." Limited to 250 copies. Mint : $20K

The Beatles "Yesterday"...and Today (1966) .. The stereo version of the "Butcher Cover," as it is known, is far more difficult to find than other variants of this highly sought-after record. Mint : $15K

Any 78 RPM singles by Robert Johnson from 1937 .. $7.5K each in Mint, generally ..

Even modern items can get valuable .. Led Zeppelin Classic Records Road Case from 2006 [Compilation] .. 48 vinyl LP set of Led Zeppelin's complete discography, all 45 rpm, in "road case." $5K

So, don't throw them out or sell them before checking eBay .. :)

Since we've had a lesson on Light Bulbs, I thought I would add another Class on what I know .. ;) .. to the Thread that just keeps giving .. :)

Igloo 3.2 cu ft Upright Freezer, White - Walmart.com
kewl!!!

For those west coast of Florida porchers, Geordi and I are entered in the Brooksville dog show January 23 and 24. Exit 301 on I75 - I can post further directions when I know our ring times... Would be a hoot to have a cheering section!
oh man how neat. Wish we had some around us, I love watchin em on TV but would so love to see some in person.

Also most LED bulbs are plastic so they don't shatter when dropped.
kewl didn't know that

Well,well,well.......I'm finally caught up. I wonder how long that's going to last since I now have to get off here and prepare to go back to work.
dadgummit, the time you're at work always seems so long and the time you're at home seems so short!!

Yea, in the south they have no idea to handle even the smallest amount of snow. I remember back in 69 it dropped maybe 100 flakes of snow around Orlando Fl and they closed all schools for the day... :eek:o_O
not only that.......but if you're one of the last to get to the store, the shelves are empty!!

Will they fit in a large priority mail box. That has no weight limit.
actually they do have I think a 70 lb limit Dave can tell us for sure, but no 150 lps would take many boxes!!
