and the CMOS (the computers OWN software section that basically CONTROLLS everything attached to the mainboard) and then receives the information from the CPU and delivers it back to it's original sender. But that's my take on it.

Complementary metal-oxide semiconductor, or CMOS, typically refers to a battery-powered memory chip in your computer that stores startup information. Your computer's basic input/output system (BIOS) uses this information when starting your computer.

The first computers I worked on you had to key in the bootstrap loader which was a small machine language program that made the computer smart enough to read the program from a tape. Once the program was loaded I would set the instruction address register to the address of the start of the program in memory and hit run.

CPU's now have a set address in memory that they read and execute the code there upon startup from either an EEPROM or NOVRAM chip that does not forget but can be overwritten with new BIOS if needed.

Beautiful!! Love watching the deer around our house too. It's especially nice when they come so close to the house (except when they eat my shrubs!)

I could look at a view that includes wildlife or waves all day long & be totally at peace!

First off, my grateful and appreciative thanx fer da kind and sweet BD (ate squared, sumpin') wishes!

Must say dat I definitely porked out on da beef last night. My eldest daughter grilled up sum awesome 1.5" thick MR Porterhouse steaks, butter with baked taters, fresh steamed broccoli and sausage stuffin' stuffed jalapeno peppers!

Haven't ate dat much in a looong looong while. Did my damage wid 2/3s of a MR PH two pounder! Gave da filet to my bride...

Lastly, being in a somewhat melancholy mood this evening, must say that I did miss celebrating wid y'all on da porch(s)! Hopefully, y'all know that your presence here is truly a Blessing, not only for me, but so many others. Peace...

I am a Seenager (Senior teenager)

I have everything that I wanted as a teenager, only 60 years later.

I don't have to go to school or work.

I get an allowance every month.

I have my own pad.

I don't have a curfew.

I have a driver's license and my own car.

I have ID that gets me into bars and the wine store. I like the wine store best.

The people I hang around with are not scared of getting pregnant, they aren’t scared of anything, they have been blessed to live this long, why be scared?

And I don't have acne.

Life is Good! Also, you will feel much more intelligent after reading this, if you are a Seenager.

Brains of older people are slow because they know so much. People do not really decline mentally with age; it just takes them longer to recall facts because they have more information in their brains. Scientists believe this also makes us hard of hearing as it puts pressure on our inner ear.

Much like a computer struggles as the hard drive gets full, so too, do humans take longer to access information when their brains are full.

Researchers say this slowing down process is not the same as cognitive decline. The human brain works slower in old age, said Dr. Michael Ramscar, but only because we have stored more information over time. The brains of older people do not get weak. On the contrary, they simply know more.

Also, older people often go to another room to get something and when they get there, they stand there wondering what they came for. It is NOT a memory problem; it is nature's way of making older people do more exercise.

SO THERE!!

There are so many things I want to un-remember but I forgot what they are.

yup

(glad we're still talking about old computers, cuz all that plumbing talk went way, way over my head :) )

i wire-wrapped my first computers. couldn't afford an automated paper-tape reader, so after spending an hour keying in the bootstrap on the 16 switches, i had to RUN (literally) the paper tape at a certain constant speed in order to load the OS of the day on a manual paper tape reader. (Usually Tiny Basic)

i taught my 2 year old daughter how to program...

10 ? "I love you daddy"
20 GOTO 10

she was enthralled...

Sadly, her love of computers didn't last long.

But, the indoctrination held up. She still loves me

:)

Before my time. My first was the Tandy 1000TX. No paper strip, but they mentioned an archive system. So help me, it recorded audible squeaks and chirps. The didn't really recommend the system. Later, I bought and installed a clock. Finally, I bought and installed my own hard drive. The TX might have been the most incompatible computer on the market at the time. It only worked with Radio Shack components, and it wasn't cheap.

At one time I was really handy with MS DOS 3.1. I never recovered from the introduction of Windows. Oh, and there was WordPerfect. Outstanding program even if you did need a keyboard template to make use of all the features, and I had it doing things that I'm not sure is possible with Word 2007.

Hi everybody. I haven't had much to say lately, although I've been trying to keep up with the reading. My mama always said, "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything." So, I've just been sitting here reading and trying to stay warm. Last time I checked, it was 46 degrees down here on the island, but those 25 knot winds are relentless!! The wind, along with the humidity, make for a miserable cold.

I'm grateful for the end of the holiday season. The prognosis for the oil and gas industry is still dismal. Our litmus test will come in February when the company we are contracted out to has a big loan payment to make. We shall see.

Time for me to shutup now.

Well... the good ol' USPS has let me down - again.

Question: When you send something from GA to, let's say, the Tampa Bay area, why the H... does it go to Opa Locka (greater Miami) and SIT THERE FOR 3 DAMN DAYS?

Jeez, just another sign this country is headed for the crapper - due to incompetence, inefficiency, bureaucracy, bloat ... etc. etc. etc.

I know what you mean. I'm sure I drop in at least three times a day. If I don't see anything that inspires me in the two most recent pages, I don't say nothing.

On the quote, I believe it was Dorothy Parker who said, "If you don't have anything good to say about someone, come over and sit by me".

And that reminds me: The rule for quotes at the end of the sentence requires the period be placed inside the quotation marks. Respectfully, I refuse.
