G'day Good Folks,

My wife left yesterday to go spend a couple'a days visiting her Mom, ~4 hrs. from here. My daughter followed her and will go on back to Statesboro to school from there. This morning, my son and I watched CBS Sunday Morning together (ok, the first part anyway), cooked breakfast, flew the DJI P3S, hung out all morning, washed some clothes, did some yard work my wife wanted done, fixed up a late lunch of leftovers, and a little while ago he left to go to a friends' for a Sunday cookout.

So then I'm home alone.

I turned off all the noise-makers around the house - TV, radios, etc. - and sat down on the back deck.

Facing the woods out back, eyes closed, contemplating life.

In a rocking chair, soakin' in the sounds of nature, practically devoid of any human-made noises for at least 10-15 minutes. Ahhhhhhh yesss... mmmmmm... ahhhhhh...

I even started thinking about the phrase 'Ce la vi' --- 'Such is Life' --- and while I was contemplating the depth and breadth of such a simple, yet profound, construct of ancient wisdom...

It dawned on me:

My drones' battery is almost fully re-charged!

Time to FLY babeee!

Yeeeehaaaaa!!!

:D:D:D:D:D

Eighth inch? Amazing! And gorgeous...

One of my bride's sis (Papua, New Guinea mountain missionary) sent us a couple of bamboo vases when we were stationed in Denver. Low humidity was not kind at all!

Wid ya in Az, what's your 'secret'? Oil?

Umpteen coats of Deft spray laquer on that one. Wood oils work too but need to be reapplied every year to preserve the piece. Did I mention I'm lazy and forgetful?

I think your turning is top notch diver. Turning those pen blanks is way harder than people think, especially with exotic wood types without causing fiber tearouts. I think you're doing great.
I'm a self taught woodworker too, kind of, I took woodshop class in high school but the most helpful thing for me to really get going was a set of those Time Life Woodworking books; a 24 book set iirc.
Finding woodworkers to learn from here in the sticks is not an option. We just have to plug along picking up what we can from books and the net I guess.
I think I have some of that same birdseye maple burl left over from making the pencil holders. Wouldn't it be awesome if I sent you a few pen blanks and you sent me a pen in return?
Happy turning friend
Thank you. I will admit that I am very familiar with a waste bin. I wish I had a wood burning stove in the workshop, then I wouldn't have to look at the pile in the waste bin. lol
Now you are talking my language, bartering is a good way of life. I have never worked with a burl blank but I can imagine the maple burl would make a beautiful pen.

I almost hate to admit what I'm having for supper...

a fried Spam sammich, Ruffles w/ french onion dip, and a cold BL ... yummmeee
Dinner at our house was burgers on the grill with some smoked boudin. I don't know who started it but I also made some of the french onion dip with the Ruffles chips. Ruffles have ridges!

I'm not caught up on the thread so don't know the 'back story' on that, but sounds like you know how to finish wood.

Also... I can identify with that last sentence.

Here you go @Debadoo , a birdseye maple burl pencil holder I spun up on the lathe for mom 25yrs ago. There was quite a few voids to fill with brass filings and CA. The wall thickness is less than 1/8", I was lucky it didn't explode during the turning process being cut that thin.

Just beautiful Cig. So the brass filings you speak of..is that one..bottom pic, bottom of the pencil holder, dead center? And why fill these? aren't they just marks in the wood?

My snowball family is very scared. They were found under a house in the country and turned into the shelter. Not much human contact. Mom is not trusting me yet. Because she is scared I put a little tunnel thing in the cage so she can hide a little while she gets used to me coming around her. The babies have ventured out a little. Not a good pic because they will not stand still

Anyone who gets CBS, 60 minutes is doing a story tonight about digital/mobile device 'addiction'... sounds interesting.
Uhm, I don't need to see that! I cannot just sit & do nothing. I have to have my hands occupied. I watch tv & read, or surf. Sitting in line somewheren I surf. No down time unless I'm sleeping.

Thanks. Yes that's one of over a dozen voids filled with brass filings (dust). The dark ring around the birdseye bottom left of the one you mentioned is filled too. The rest are very small voids and hard to see unless the light hits them just right.
I fill them to produce a slick gloss finish when lacquered so my pieces appear to be flaw free until closer inspection reveals something special.
